c-section at UWMC

Hi ladies,

I'm due to have my 3rd c-section sometime around Dec 1 at the UWMC.  We lived abroad before, so this is my first PG and birth in the US, and things are pretty different here =)

I'd love to read any tips you might have or other things you can share about your experiences at UWMC, especially if you've had a c-section there.  I've been going to my family practice doctor & will have my first appt. with an OB sometime in the next few weeks - I don't know yet who it will be.  Any particular questions I should ask or things to expect?

Thanks in advance!

Re: c-section at UWMC

  • A friend of mine had a cesarean at UWMC ten years ago, and again in March. I can ask her for any advice. I myself volunteered at UWMC for a year, though in an ICU and not L&D. I like the hospital, and when we went to visit her in March the nurses seemed nice and knowledgeable. Will try to find out more. (:

I was a doula for my good friend just had her 3rd C-section there eight weeks ago (she attempted a VBA2C with Dr Shope but was not successful). Overall her experience was good. In fact she went home after just under 36 hours. It's a teaching hospital and because my friend was attempting a vaginal birth she got whoever was on call at the time. She had one "bad" doctor but every other doctor that was on rotation was great. Dr Lewis was one doctor that stood out. She was amazing. I'm not sure which doctor actually performed the surgery because we were working with a resident at the time (I do know that he did not perform the surgery, an attending did). The nurses were fantastic, particularly Beth.

Side note, if you ever think about attempting a vaginal birth I hear Dr Shope is the best. She told my client she has even attended vaginal births after 3 C-sections. She comes highly recommended. I met her in some of my client's prenatal appointments and she seems very down to earth.

  • Thanks so much for the responses!  I've been happy with my family's experiences at the UW neighborhood clinic we go to, and I very much like that it's a teaching clinic and hospital.  I have an appointment at the end of the month with Dr. Simmons in the Maternal & Infant Care clinic.  Happy to read any other experiences!
