Rice cereal?

I called my pedi concerned my LO may have reflux. They gave me a nurse and she told me to express milk and add a tsp. of rice cereal to the milk to help keep it down.

LO isn't even two months yet, hasn't seen the pedi yet. This is the worst advice ever, right? I am seeing negative things about rice cereal, especially pre-4 months. I also don't want to give up bf, constantly pumping and cleaning the parts sounds even more stressful.

Anyone else receive bad advice from your dr office? What was it?

Re: Rice cereal?

  • My daughter also has reflux and they told me to do the same thing but I'm just going to try the medicine first, if that doesn't work I may try the rice cereal.

Yeah, I wouldn't follow that advice. It's outdated as shit, lol. And it's definitely not cool if your baby hasn't even been properly diagnosed yet.

Wait until she sees the pedi and make your decision from there. What symptoms does LO have? Have you tried lots of burping, inclined sleeping, gas meds?

  • My LO went to the pedi yesterday and was given prilosec for his reflux. She also told me that I can do the rice cereal but like the PP said, I am going go try the meds first.

She spits up as soon as I lay her down. I burp her for about 10 minutes then keep her upright for an hour. She tends to arch her back too. It just breaks my heart how much she spits up! Plus I worry she isn't gaining weight because of it, she's almost out of her newborn sized clothes :(
  • I wouldn't do it unless you saw a doctor in office and that was his recommendation.  DD #1 had some digestive issues and the nurse I spoke to on the phone (at our pedi's office) gave me recommendations that I just knew weren't right.  Sure enough, when I took her in to see the doctor, he recommended something completely different.

  • If u do have to do cereal. Do oatmeal instead of rice. Way easier on the digestive system. But yes talk with pedi about it!

  • Just saw that you asked what the bad advice was.  What the nurse told me with DD #1 when she was probably 20 months old was "Diarrhea in toddlers is totally normal--some kids just have diarrhea all the time for years."  DD was seriously blowing out of diapers multiple times a day every day for months.  Mommy instinct told me not to take that answer.  When I took her to the office, the doctor said it absolutely was not normal and put us on an elimination diet to test for intolerance as well as calling for a stool sample.  And yes, she was reacting badly to a supplement she was on.

  • Also cereal does not even mix the same way in breast milk as it does in formula

That is incredibly early for solids! The only advice doctors have ever given us regarding solids was to wait until 6 months (and my daughter had reflux!)
