Cloth 100%!! We will have 2 in cloth diapers for awhile! So much easier IMO, they stink so much less than disposables and they are so much cheaper. Also...my son has only had 2 minor rashes his whole 20 month life..and that was from days we used disposable. (can you tell I love my cloth lol)
FTM here, I'm going to use disposable at least in the beginning just because I don't want one more thing to worry about making sure there's enough of/learning how to use. I think, maybe, after a few weeks to a few months I'll try out cloth, but daycare won't use cloth diapers so baby will need to be in disposables at least part of the day.
The cloth diapers we have are from 7 to 35 pounds. Since I have nothing more than a guesstimate of what the baby will weigh once he's born, we've bought some disposable newborn diapers.
I know they make cloth diapers in newborn sizes, but I didn't want to spend the money on them since I didn't know how long we'd be using them, or if we'd be using them at all (if baby is big).
Like pps said, we are using disposables for the first few days as I've read the meconium can stain the diapers.
Meconium does stain, but if you hang them to dry in the sun it comes right out! Actually, BF poo stains as well. But again, the sun will remove the stains.
As for doing diaper laundry all day, I love doing diaper laundry. It's the only laundry I enjoy. I like how the stains disappear. And sorting/putting away is sooo much easier than other laundry. Sadly, it's only 3ish loads a week.
I wish I could get the rest of our laundry down to three loads a week.
Both. I am cheap and will not spend the $$$ for newborn cloth diapers. Yes, I realize I will spend that $$$ for disposables in that time period given how often they need changed. I just bought new cloth diapers for larger sizes and I know DH will not go for newborn too. Plus I will be lazy the first month. After that, cloth. I already have one in cloth.
We are doing disposable for the first two months and then doing a cloth diaper trial run through a local business. The trial run lasts about two weeks and we get to try out all the different kinds. From there we will decide what our long term plans are.

I want to do cloth but everytime I change a poopy diaper and I can just wrap it all up and throw it away, I have second thoughts. So much more sanitary and convenient.

Except for the fact that you are supposed to dump the poop from a disposable into the toilet. Human poop is not meant for the landfill. It should be put in the toilet so it can go to the water treatment plant. This is often mentioned on diaper packages, but the culture here in the US ignores it.
If you don't dump it, it's less sanitary to the rest of the world.
1. Cloth diapers confuse me - half of the "new" ones fall apart after a few washes, some need inserts and services make you clean the diapers anyway
2. Unfortunately I have to work after the first 6 months which means daycare which means no cloth
3. FTM
4. no time to learn/figure it out - I'm moving next week to a new state/city, I have an entire house and nursery to set up, I have to register at a new hospital and see a new OB, I have to take new labor classes and get my carseat inspected in the new state, I need to get a new license and my car inspected, Oh and I have to tour the new hospital, husband has to get established with new dr. (has chronic illness) and husband starts new job - oh and I have a graduate school class starting and I'm sure there are a hundred things not on this list....
5. I honestly don't see the decrease in waste. You wash cloth so there's laundry (i.e. water waste, energy waste) and you toss biodegradable diapers which is more landfill waste - both create waste just not the same kind. I also live in a city where water and energy is really high in cost so an increase of 3+ loads of laundry a week is very expensive.
I will keep an open mind. Especially if LO develops a rash or allergic reaction then it's easy, I'll just have to pay more and use cloth but for now I'm going to try and use the nice biodegradable diapers and I'll follow the rule to flush the poo. That's easy enough.
