Stay at Home Moms

Unexpected turn of events

So I a currently slated to return to work on Sept 4th, but the position they want to offer me is 30 minutes from home, late hours, and with the 12 hour shifts my DH works probably not compatible with a 1 year old and a kindergarten student so it is starting to look as though I will be staying home with my sweet baby girl.

I am really excited to get this opportunity, even if it means DH will have to pick up extra shifts on his week off, because I have been a wreck over my return to work. I am in Canada and have had a year off with my little girls, but as the date has been getting closer I am realizing I don't want to miss out on her being little and think this crappy work offer has been a blessing in disguise.

My question for those who SAH are do you do anything on the side for extra cash for the family? I know of a lot of moms sew/knit/etc and I am just curious what kinds of other side projects our sahm's do.

  • I waitress two evenings a week when the kids are in bed. Other businesses that offer part time, off hours are grocery stores, hotels, retail, hospitals and call centers.

  • You're going to make him work more so you can stay home? Is he on board with this?
  • He works 1 week straight of 12 hour shifts and then gets one whole week off. As it stands now he works a shift or two on his week off because they are short staffed. He would be picking up 3 extra shifts total, so he would still have 4 days off on his days off.

He is absolutely on board with this. When he works overtime he gets paid time and a half automatically. He works in the traffic division of our highways up here, so when winter hits he also does snow plowing as well, which works out to a good chunk because they get a bonus for plowing.

I am also looking into some school upgrading online for myself so that once my littlest is in school, I will be able to command more when I go back to work. I am currently a pharmacy technician and would be able to go to school and go back as a registered technician which is a higher paying position.

  • I'm currently researching daycares so I can transition DS into care maybe a few days a week. Once that's taken care of I'll start looking for work. I recently spoke with someone in my field who says that he frequently has projects that he contracts out (landscape design drawing/drafting), so I should get in touch with him if I'm interested in that kind of work. While it would have limited growth potential, it would offer flexibility and the chance to keep my skills sharp. And I would still have plenty of time/energy for DS while he is young. So that is something that I am considering.

I do knit and crochet but I'm not interested in doing it for money. That would really take the enjoyment out of it for me. Plus, it's really hard to pay yourself a fair wage by crafting.

OP, it sounds like you have a career already and room to grow with it. Maybe the current job offer isn't ideal for this stage of your children's lives, but keep putting out feelers and maybe something else will come along that fits the needs of your family better.

DH already works a lot, I would hate to be making a financial decision that took even more time away from family. Thankfully we are not in that position.
