Is anyone doing this? I'm being hounded right now by all the companies and private banks but still unsure. I wish I knew more people doing it. Any thoughts?
We are doing Viacord, we did it with my son and are doing it again. I always feel like its best to be as prepared as possible if something bad were to happen. If public cord blood registry were available to us I'd probably do that but unfortunately that's not an option. Plus we know a little girl who needs a marrow transplant and is looking desperately for a match and I hope I'm never in their situation but if they would have banked her search would be over.
DH and I weren't going to do it, but have decided to look into it. Of course, none of the info you request talks about price...they just tell you to enroll and get your kit, and you only pay if you send in the kit after delivery. I feel like I'm running out of time to make this decision though...

I would do the research. Like the other PP said...the likely hood that you will need the cord blood is so slim and then even if you need it the likely hood that what you banked will help is even slimmer so if you have a history that warrants it then I might feel differently but do the research yourself before making a decision. Its not cheap.
We saved it once, only because our other son needed the transplant immediately. Otherwise even our cord blood specialists said its pointless to save the cord blood for the baby because they'd never use it for that baby. If they need a transplant, they aren't going to inject more of the problem back into them. They need something new. So unless a family member needs it, and the chance of it matching them is very slim, then there's really no point. Its a way for them to make money off people. I would donate, or delay the cord cutting. With the son who needed to donate his, he was anemic for a year afterwards. I felt so bad that we had to take so much of his cord blood. We are delaying clamping this time because nobody around here takes it for donation unless we pay to have it shipped to a bank, which cost us $300 last time.
