This show cracks me up. I know it can happen, but at the beginning they always say "no cravings, no symptoms..." but after every case they always "think back to oh thats why I ate a whole jar of pickles or gained ten pounds" all I can say is duh!

This did happen to a friends sister and had no clue until she delivered.

I think most of those people were in deep denial to ignore weight gain, not getting periods and baby movement. Even if you have no other symptoms, I can't imagine ignoring the movement.

I seen an episode where the woman had very bad pcos. She was getting irregular bleeds, which was probably burst cysts, I get that when I'm preggo. When she went into labour she thought a cyst was bursting or her ovary was twisting. I was like, ok I'm board, I can see this, no bc cause of pcos, no lmp cause of irregular cycles, no substantial weight gain because of bad prenatal care but then... she didn't go to a&e after having her premmie on her bathroom floor, at point I just thought, you're an idiot. I do love the show tho, to my eternal shame.

This happened to a coworker's sister TWICE! And it was her 2nd and 3rd child, so you would think she would know what pregnancy felt like! Sadly, one of her children has some serious health issues due to lack of prenatal care. I just don't understand it...

I hate how unrealistic it is that EVERY child from that show always seems to pop out perfect regardless of their complete lack of prenatal care or precautions. Although, I guess it makes sense that watching the mom who gave birth to a child with severe FAS or spinal cord defects wouldn't be nearly as TV-friendly.

I didn't know about DD until I was 14 weeks. I was young and had irregular periods and my only symptom in the beginning was upset stomach which I chalked up to my normal stomach issues I'd had since I was 8. I started throwing up around 12 weeks and having a lot of dizziness. I found out during an ultrasound to check my gallbladder.

All that said I really don't think I would have gone the entire pregnancy without knowing but I guess I can see how it could happen.

I cannot imagine this happening to me. But i did get a big round belly. I guess it really is different when you don't show much? I had a pretty easy pregnancy but.... I dunno if I could have just not known between a 30 pound weight gain, a huge belly and back pain from hell. Not to mention the peeing. So. Much. Peeing.

I can see being 20 weeks before realizing, I get that. I was barely showing by then. But 40 weeks? I agree denial is a powerful thing and also am always surprised that none of the babies they air seem to have any issues.

I think it is possible but can understand the disbelief. I think some women, including myself, are highly attuned to their body, where as others aren't. If you add actively TTC to that I reckon it would be nearly impossible to miss it. X

I like that show too, some of the stories seem pretty ridiculous that they didn't know, but others seem understandable. I remember one of them where the girl was only like 120 lbs and they had a picture of her in a swimsuit about 2 weeks before she gave birth and she absolutely did not look pregnant. Granted, I believe the baby was a little premature, but the mom had had a heart condition since birth, so that along with not looking pregnant, I can totally understand how she would have dismissed symptoms.

I saw that episode too and it was the actors that they showed, but I am sure she was probably small too since she only weighed 120 lbs. The part that makes me laugh is the fact that there is a show about this! I guess it happens more often, but some of the episodes, they are stretching it a little bit.

A former co-worker found out at 5 months. I kinda noticed her boobs were like REALLY bouncy, but she's always super private. One day, another friends just was like "Are you pregnant?" My co-worker BURST INTO TEARS and said she had just found out earlier that week. She had no symptoms, she was on the pill. Other than her girls, she hadn't really gained any weight. She said she thought something was up because she went to a baseball game in 90 degree heat and when she stood up, she felt really woozy. She was like "I haven't felt this way since DS was born." So her DH was like "what you pregnant?" And she bought a pee-stick just to goof around with him. She thought for sure it must have been a recent event but she nearly died when they said she was 5 months along. They told her the sex and everything at her first u/s.

I've mentioned this before but I used to volunteer with many women who were in similar situations. It happens quite a bit. Unfortunately a common thread in a good chunk of those cases are either incredibly religious family members of a young/teen mother or abusive partners - those two situations create a situation that leads to something called psychotic denial of pregnancy because women are afraid for their physical safety or to disappoint their families so their brains (essentially) deny a pregnancy exists at all. I've seen women who watched their fetus move in their bellies on ultrasound and STILL couldn't believe they were pregnant. Like, absolutely thought it was a video or a made up ultrasound.

And then there are the other cases, like my own mother, who's a nurse. She didn't know she was pg with my younger sister until she was 5ish months along. It took her 9 years to conceive me with medical intervention and was told it would never happen again. Her periods never returned postpartum, no morning sickness or any symptoms, she had PCOS and severe endometriosis, and didn't gain any weight (where she definitely gained weight, had severe morning sickness and looked pregnant with me). 3.5 years later, BAM, sister.

i can understand not finding out about a pregnancy until later. however, for women to not even think it's possible for them to be pregnant until they deliver is beyond me! I too think a lot of the time it's serious denial. But it's funny that there are always happy endings to these stories. Not saying i want to see that babies born sick, but i just don't think that show is being realistic at all. Hell i've even had a "virgin" teenage patient who was 5 months pregnant and didn't want us to tell her mom. But mom had to know b/c she was in a children's hospital and we don't do ob care there so she had to get transferred. Denial much!
