Suddenly HATES the tub? tl;dr

edited August 2013 in Babies: 9 - 12 Months
Hi all. My lo is about 9 1/2 months for all you mobile bumpers. She has always loved the bath, ever since she was little. When she was about 6 months old we switched her from her infant tub (she outgrew the length) to this tub:

Ever since we "transitioned" her, she's loved it! She sat up, splashed around, played with various toys and wash cloths... Up until a few nights ago. We went to give DD a bath like normal and she started flipping out! I thought maybe my husband had made the water too warm for her so I took her out and added some cool water. It didn't help. She screamed the whole 5 minutes I was bathing her. Afterwards, I nursed her and she fell asleep, so I chalked it up to her being tired. Then, the same thing happened two nights later, and again tonight. I have no idea what her deal is! I tried doing it a little later, I make sure she's not hungry, the water temp is good...she just seems to hate the bath.

Someone tell me this is temporary, and that she will love the bath again! Please?

  • We had a phase like this for about a week or two...for us it coincided with when he was tryiing to stand in the tub/pull up on the side, which I didn't let him do because it was slippery. Now it seems to be better and he's content to sit/crawl in the tub for about 8-10 minutes before he tries pulling up, which is my signal to take him out. BUt he's no longer hysterical while I bathe him.

  • My LO never loved baths, but was ok during them.  Then a couple of months ago he started screaming bloody murder at bath time and acting as if we were torturing him while trying to bathe him.  We tried several ways to get him to enjoy bath time: toys, running water, bathing him in the kitchen sink, cooler water, warmer water, setting him in the bathtub in a laundry basket with his toys all around him; but none of that made things any better.  Our solution for now is to bathe him outside in the back yard in his kiddie pool.  He LOVES being in the water outdoors; sprinklers, pools, splash pads, garden hoses, he would probably even like the bathtub if it was outside.  We let him play, then soap him up and rinse him off with the hose.  He loves it and doesn't even mind if water gets in his face.  Of course, this will only work till the weather cools down, but by then I'm hoping he will have outgrown his bathtub aversion.
  • DD started fussing in the tub a little while back - it coincided with her wanting to crawl and explore in the tub.  We just covered the bottom of the bathtub in the no-slip mats and let her crawl around. She is much better now.... perhaps your LO is just looking for a little more freedom?

Or it could be a phase.

  • Thanks all. Hopefully its just a phase since we have no bathtub, only a shower stall...
  • Have you tried using the shower head to rinse her? My son got bored with bath time so now we rinse with the shower head and he loves it!
