Re: help please!

  • Not sure why you must get her off... But either way.. Really with a paci there is she has it or she doesn't.. So the only way to take it away is to do as such.

I've heard one other way and that is to let them have it until they just fall asleep and then pull it but my kid would then just wake up and scream.

So cold turkey is the only way I've heard anyone succeed

  • Not sure the need to take it away just yet, especially if she only uses it when she's sleeping, but the only methods I've heard successfully working are with older kids (2-3).  The paci "gets hurt" (ie mom cuts off half of it) and since it's no longer easy to suck on, the kid gives it up.  Since the child is older, though, there is usually a conversation about it "being hurt" and not being able to fix it.  With your little one under a year, though, you probably can only go cold turkey and just take it away and struggle through the fits until she learns to be ok without it.
  • Why do you want her off of the paci so bad?  If she only uses it to sleep, I don't see a problem.

  • We went cold turkey right around a year. It was a rough week, but totally worth it!

this.  I have found that sometimes when you take things away too early, they form another habit, ie:  sucking thumb

  • im trying to get mine to get rid of hers because i know from experiance with my bf that it can cause bad teeth. thats why his teeth are messed up. and he would rather that not happen to her. mine pops the paci out in her sleep. i just would like her to stop needing it to fall to sleep. i would rather her not have it till shes three like i did.

Pacifiers have gotten a lot better since when we were kids, and they have those orthodontic ones that are shaped better so they don't mess with your teeth. I think it can only really make a difference with teeth if they're still using it at 3 or 4. And for the record, I had a friend who sucked her thumb through high school...so  if taking away a pacifier too early causes her to suck her thumb, that could be way more detrimental. You can't take away a thumb!

  • I have read about this gentle paci removal plan, but I haven't actually done it: https://babyparenting.about.com/od/sleeping/a/nightfeed.htm It's from the No-Cry Sleep Solution author. The actual instructions are on page 2 of the link.

We took DD's away cold turkey when she turned 1. It was really only rough for naps for a day or two. But you have to make sure all caregivers are on the same page. GL!
