Success after IF

talk to me about vasectomies...

not for me or dh! haha. but just wondering if anyone has experience with their DH/SO having one and then conceiving. a friend of mine is married and starting to TTC with her husband who has two children from a previous marriage and got a vasectomy 5 years ago. he is 39 she is 34. she was asking me some questions and i wasn't really sure how to answer. because she's about to turn 35 in september she already had a full work up and everything on her end looks good. but she's nervous about her dh's sperm not being viable even after the reversal. any success stories?

Re: talk to me about vasectomies...

  • Don't ask me why I know this, but my old boss had 2 children then had a vasectomy. He cheated on his wife, and one of her conditions for taking him back was to have a reversal. They had another child together.

Then he cheated on her again with a different woman and accidentally knocked her up. I left NYC 11 yrs ago, but I'm pretty sure I heard that he ended up having another child with the mistress-turned-second wife. Klassy.

Moral of the story, one can still father children after a reversal. :)

  • My husband at 46 y.o. had his reversal 6 years after his vasectomy. The surgeon said he had a great success rate since we really wanted to conceive naturally. However after a year of feverishly trying and I was fast approaching 40, I knew we had to get another opinion. I made an appt with a Fertility Specialist, and during our initial visit he made a good point, he said if I was in my 20's the reversal made sense, however at my 'advanced maternal age' time was not on our side. He wished that we wouldn't have spent the $12,000 on reversal, rather spent it on some sort of fertility treatment since I may not have been dropping fertilizable eggs every month due to my age and he may not have been producing viable sperm due to trauma/inflammation of the reversal. In other words, age should be taken into consideration when choosing vasectomy reversal.
So after 39 eggs retrieved and 22 viable and 10 genetically perfect we are 7 weeks pregnant with our little GIRL :). And very excited! But wished we could've avoided all of the extra expense!!
