BFers: To WCM, or not to WCM? That is the question...

So, I wouldn't even be worrying about this if I weren't going to be out of town for nearly six days - EEEEEEK - shortly after DD's first birthday, but because I will be, and because I have no idea how much she drinks while nursing but it's almost certainly more than what we have in our small freezer stash, I am wondering what to do to fill in the gaps while I'm away? I plan to continue to pump while I'm gone because I'll be devastated if our nursing relationship tanks (I'm not ready to give it up, and neither, I suspect, is DD), but I'm still fretting over what to do if DH burns through the whole stash. Should I encourage him to mix BM with WCM, or something else? Should I just tell him to offer solids first and a smaller sippy of milk after? If DD moves toward being a morning and night nurser, I'd be okay with that. I'm just not sure how to handle this transition plus vacation. Worse comes to worse, it's only six days, and we're going to fall back into our usual pattern after and DD can build my supply back up to what it would normally be if I were home.

Basically, any recommendations? And what did you offer your littles if not WCM?

  • Pretty much ditto everything PP said. I'd offer sippies of WCM and not mix. My DD never seemed to notice the transition from BM to WCM... As long as it was in her bottle or cup, she would chug it. Still does, actually.

Hugs to you, too. Try not to worry too much about it while you're gone. There's no substitute for mommy, and I'm sure you'll pick right up where you left off when you get home!

  • At 1 DD was mostly eating solids and drinking water. She conveniently got sick and and had sores in her throat right around her bday so she weaned herself from bottles. She went down to 2 cups of milk/day. One in the morning and one at night. Now she barely drinks any milk, maybe one cup all day. Depending on how much she's nursing it might not really be a problem and the stash might last longer than you think. But WCM would probably be fine as long as there aren't any dairy sensitivities that you're aware of.

  • I never mixed BM with WCM. If I didn't have any pumped BM then my son got WCM.  After a year old I probably gave him two sippy cups of WCM a day, the rest of his fluids were water or juice mixed in water.  I would start giving her a little WCM now if the pedi says its fine so she can start getting used to it.
