Tonight I gave DS cereal for the first time and he liked it!! He did a really good job eating....way better than I thought he would do the first time. Anyone else given their LO's cereal yet?

  • Ah!!! Your ladies posts make me so excited to feed my guy. He's a big eater and puts everything in his mouth. I have a feeling he'll love it. Just a few more weeks...

I'm also waiting until 6-ish months before starting cereal, but I remember it being ridiculously watery at first. I just followed the directions on the package for amounts.

If your LO isn't impressed, maybe wait a week or so, then try again. Sometimes that's all it takes. :)

Any reason you ladies are starting early??? I though 6 months was when you should wait until... And are you giving before/after bottle/feeding? It's not replacing a meal right???
You are supposed to give it after a feeding, it does not replace a meal.

  • I started at four months because our pediatrician said between 4-5 months is around the time babies iron levels start to decrease & the cereal can add iron that my milk isn't giving him. We did our research & the benefits outweighed the cons due to his reflux as well. Each pediatrician is different & I know there are a lot of differing options out there.

  • Connor has had cereal since about 2.5 months per doctor's orders for his reflux. It has helped him a lot. When he was being breastfed he would spit almost all of it up and gag all the time over it. When I had to supplement with formula at 2 months, he was still gagging and spitting up all the time. I added cereal, not as much as I was told to.. but enough to make it about the consistency of nectar.(It can still fit through the Dr. Browns ventilation cap in the bottle) That helped a lot.

I have never given him rice cereal and no, it did not help him sleep, it did not satisfy his hunger longer, or any of those sayings. The only thing it did do was bump him a few notches up the weight percentile. He was 20% he is now about 30-40% or so.

I started a few days ago to feed him thick cereal, he liked it a lot. He lost his tongue reflex, he grabs the spoon (whenever I actually use it), he reaches for the oatmeal when I set it in front of him and he mostly plays with his fingers in it. I will try avocados next, perhaps in a few weeks or a month though. Even now I am not feeding him actual thickened cereal every day. He is... half interested. More interested in watching me stuff my face and probably finds it funny... "dang mommy you just had that whole ice cream sandwich 2 seconds ago."

Our pediatrician gave us the ok to start. It does not replace a meal. I gave it to DS about an hour before bed time which our pediatrician suggested to give as a bedtime snack.

My pediatrician said to start him on cereal at 4 months and other solids at 5-6 months.  So according to her advice, we're not starting early, but right on time!  It isn't replacing a meal -- once I did bottle first and then cereal, once I did cereal first and thne bottle.  The latter worked better, but neither were a big hit.  We'll probably wait a week and try again.

I'm confused. I have never read anything about breast milk not providing the correct levels of iron?

  • I understand that not everyone agrees with starting cereal at 4 months. To each their own....I feel no one is right or wrong for when they choose to start their LO's on cereal. I was looking through my own baby book yesterday. My mom had written that she started me on fruit at 4 months and table food and 2% milk at 6 months. Oh how times have changed!!

  • For every piece of research/pediatrician recommendation out there for starting at 4 months there's another piece of research/pediatrician recommendation stating to wait at least until 6. I, for one, will try around 4 months and go off of my baby's cues. That's not to say that my opinion is right, just maybe that there is no EXACT time or RIGHT time for all babies in general to start. Food for thought.
