I'm curious who all is considering or planning to have their membranes stripped and when. Anyone can chime in even if you are 100 percent against it.

I had it done last time at my 40 week appt. I had son 2 days later. I didn't realize this was a controversial topic. I will do it again if I get to 40 weeks. Meh. No big deal to me.

It was never offered to me and I've had three children that all went to their due date and beyond. Two inductions.

I'm considering it. I'm 36 weeks Friday and it has been talked about with my midwife. She is ok doing it after 37 weeks (willing my cervix is open at all.) I am not totally sure I am on board with doing that early, but I think will around 38 or 39 weeks Iif baby isn't here. I'm 50 percent effaced now and baby is right on my cervix. So I'm hoping I don't stray there.

It's removing all or part of the mucus plug manually.

In regards to it being controversial, it was on my old BMB, maybe it isn't here? Either way, I'm still interested to see what people say about it.

I had it done 2x with my son, it was super painful for me. I understand for some it doesn't hurt at all or minimally. I would not do it again.

I'm open to it if I'm at 40 weeks or so, and still not seeing any action, if my care provider recommends it.

That being said, I've been having BH & stronger contractions all day (and periodically for the last two weeks or so), I'm already somewhat (finding out percentage tomorrow) effaced, and having loads of lower abd pressure coupled with cramps and back pain. I know this could go on for some time, but right now, I'm focusing on keeping this kid cooking for a while rather than considering eviction strategies.

If my doctor recommends it, I'll probably do it. Otherwise, I don't know that I will. We'll see what happens!

I had mine done at 40w2d last time and it was the most painful part of all of childbirth for me. I wasn't dilated at all. It did not work, but I started having painful contractions that day which didn't progress for 5 days. I did ultimately go into labor on my own vs having to be induced, so if I go late again I will discuss with my Dr whether those contractions helped me progress or whether I was just in pain for 5 days for no reason. I would consider having it done again, but not until I'm past due and likely not unless I was dilated.

I had mine done with ds the day before his due date and had him the following day. Already spoke to ob about it and he is fine with doing it again since I have a appointment scheduled for the day before again.

I had mine done at 40 weeks with DS and it did nothing for me at all. I also thought it was pretty painful, but maybe I was just being a wuss.

If I get to 38 or 39 weeks, I'm not against it. Pretty sure parts of my MP are already missing from what I've seen on tp. They're totally not cute.

It sounds painful, but if I was more than a week overdue I'd consider it, to rather than being induced with drugs.

I had actually heard it was the dr. separating the placenta from the uterus by running a finger between which is what you may mean by stripping bag of waters. I am open to this if I am after my due date to help promote labor since I would like to go med-free.

This is me too. My dr's are very informative but my personality coupled with being a FTM I pretty much just go with what they suggest (unless its way off the wall which has been nothing they suggested so far).

I would be open to it if I am at least 41 weeks. Until I'm a week overdue, I don't want to mess with any induction techniques since I trust my body to know what it is doing. However, I want to avoid a medical induction, so between 41 and 42 weeks I'd try everything in the books if necessary.

My DD came at 40w3d on her own, and I'm hoping I won't need any assistance going into labor this time either.

I'm going to be induced at 39 weeks so I doubt I'll have this done. I didn't with my other two girls, either, although I'm not opposed to it. I just don't think my OB does it routinely. If it really works, then it seems like a happy alternative to chemical-based inducing methods.

It's separating the bag of waters... you don't want the doctor to separate the placenta from the uterus, that would be really bad.

From my understanding it is both *if* you are dilated enough to seperate the membranes. But otherwise they try to get as much of the MP out.

Haha yeahhhh...that's placental abruption, not a good thing, that's a bleed out thing.

haha.. woops.. I guess I misunderstood then and what I was hearing was the stripping the bag of waters not the placenta from the uterus

I had it done with DD at 38 weeks ( I was dialted 1-2cm and about 40%) and again the day before 39 weeks ( I was 3-4cm and at least 60%). Labor started about 18 hours after at 39 weeks and DD was born later that day. Clearly my body was ready for labor since I was dialted to that much - my doc said it would just help speed things up a bit hopefully. I'm undecided if I will have it done this time, if offered. I didn't find it painful at all, just a bit uncomfortable.

Dont get me wrong, I LOVE being pregnant with my baby and I cant wait for him to be born but I am no longer surprised to learn about the gross things I can look forward too. Mucus plug, bloody show, stripping membranes.....barf. They should come up with less slimy names!

I would...except this makes me nervous. My friend had it done recently too and she said it hurt. I'm already dreading L&D pain...I don't know if I could bring myself to choose this knowing it may hurt. I'm such a baby!!

Yup that is what I was told too. But they only do a little. This is what I would imagine would be painful!

I admit to not knowing much about it but if I go past my due date and start talking induction with my doc (they induce at 41w 3d) I might discuss this option with them.

I had it done at my 40w appt last time. DD was born 3 days later. Not this time as I'm having a RCS, even if I wasn't I wouldn't do it again bc it hurt like a bitch.

Only if I'm overdue or not progressing well. I'm pretty certain on my ovulation/conception date, so I know my due date is pretty accurate. If I got over 40-41 weeks, or if my OB is concerned about baby's well-being for whatever reason and wants to try it, we'll do it. I'd want to try it before agreeing to a medical induction, but I'd rather let labor start naturally.

There will be many more gross things to learn after your baby is born that will probably keep surprising you...
