Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Throwing the paci

DS2 is 11.5 months old and is HORRIBLE about this now.  He uses a paci a lot and now thinks it's awesome to chunk it over the side of the crib and have a meltdown if it's not returned.  Return it to him and he'll put it in his mouth for a couple seconds then take it out and chunk it.  This morning I left him alone without his paci and after several minutes of crying (maybe 10 minutes) he went to sleep for a whopping half hour.  His naps are usually 1.5 hours.  It's time for afternoon nap and he was playing the paci game again.  I left the room with the paci on the floor.  He's crying. Ugggghhhhh why does he do this and should I just ditch the paci for good?  I guess he will eventually get used to it?  I don't particularly care if he uses one or not, he is just pretty oral (DS1 is the opposite) and I didn't want him to start sucking his thumb.  I was hoping we'd get several more months of peace with it but I know the transition has to come at some point.  I don't really want the paci beyond 18Mish (not judging anyone who does, just my preference).

Re: Throwing the paci

  • In other news, I am sad to see that my signature, which took me dozens of attempts to update, has reverted BACK to a previous version.  This is my 1st time on the site since it got a facelift.

  • Wow, 90 weeks pregnant, that would be awful!

Have you tried a clip to clip it to his shirt?

  • Heh, I know, right?  The img linked in my signature (for DS2's age) is correct.  When I go to edit my signature and copy paste the image link into a browser window, it shows a ticker for my son being 11.5 months old.  It just doesn't show up when the signature displays in the Bump.  Annoying!

Oh... I hadn't thought of that.  I wonder what he would do.  And you know what -- I just GAVE AWAY that paci clip because we never used it when he is awake.  Doh.  I can get another one and try it.  Sometime this week.

  • Also, my LO only throws her paci when she's not tired, since we only give it to her at bed/nap time. Is he just not tired?

  • No, I think he's tired.  My mom brought over her paci clip (she keeps DS2 a lot) but I was too scared to leave him in bed unattended with it clipped to him.  I tried and just didn't feel comfortable.  The dumb thing is too long.  Even clipped it to the top of his pants and just couldn't leave it.  Oh well, I guess we will be weaning him off the paci since he's going to throw it and no one will be there to play his game.

  • Well, last night I held up the paci, told him "this is it", put it in his mouth and dashed out of the room before he could toss it.  He kept it all night and was pretty quiet.  Did the same tonight, we'll see what happens.

  • Yeah - we keep a box of her pacis in the corner of her crib - so she has like 4 in there.  I give her one for her mouth, one for her hand and then the box in the corner (its small - its from one of the nexting box sets its like the 2nd smallest) - when they are gone -they are gone.  She loves her a paci though so she doesn't toss them.... yet...

  • We startes going through this with DD a few weeks ago. I now put 4 Pacis in her bed stashed in different places so after she throws the one she has when I put her in the crib if she really needs on she will find it. So far it seems to be working. She especially thinks it's funny to throw it at my head when I come in to get her up in the morning LOL :x

  • We keep three or four in our daughter's crib.  She usually throws one or two in her pre-sleep fury, but then she lays down and picks up one that is left and goes to sleep.  I just have to pick them up off the floor before the dogs get them.  Sometimes she stashes them between the mattress and the rail and while I am reaching for the couple we leave on her bookstand... she reaches for her hiding place and pops one in her mouth.  Cracks me up.

  • I have 3 in DD's crib too, usually all are on the floor by morning. She throws her stuffed animals out too, thinks it's hysterical. At least once a night I have to go in her room to put a paci back in her mouth because she can't find any since they are on the floor  8-|
