Symptoms Before Positive Test?

My fiancé and I are not trying to conceive but as we are older, we have an "if it happens, it happens" philosophy.  Well, it might have happened.

I would have conceived about 3 weeks ago.  It was just after I finished my period, but my periods are crazy-irregular.  I often go 7 months or more without a period and there has never been a reason for it.  Incidentally I do have one other child so I know, at least theoretically, I can get pregnant.

For the past few days I've had a metallic taste in my mouth.  I slept all day yesterday, and have been getting up at night to pee (unusual for me).   I've had some light cramping and lower back pain (not bad) and some pain around my boobs.   Then today I woke up nauseous and have stayed nauseous all day.   I took a pregnancy test this morning.  It was negative.

Is it possible to feel symptoms before it shows on the test?  And if so, do these sound like pregnancy symptoms?  My only other pregnancy was 13 years ago so I don't remember much about the early days.

Thanks.

Re: Symptoms Before Positive Test?

  • If there's enough hormone for symptoms you should get a positive test. Did you test with first morning urine? What kind of test?

Also, it's fairly unusual to ovulate right after your period ends. Why do you think you conceived then?

  • The test was not with first morning urine.  It was a Clearblue Easy test.

If I conceived then, it would have been then because before that, he was traveling for two weeks for business.  After that, I just think it would have been way too soon to feel symptoms.

Maybe I'm just having an allergic reaction to something.
  • Yeah, usually if you have symptoms, then you should be able to get a positive result. Just keep testing every week until you get a positive, or your period. After 60 days or so, you can go to a doctor to be sure.

  • If you're truly concerned you're pregnant I would take a first response test first thing in the morning.

Then you can test weekly till you have a positive or your period begins.

If you don't get your period for 60 days, you should see your doctor to jump start your cycle.

  • A lot of early pregnancy symptoms are the same as PMS symptoms.   Generally speaking, if you're having symptoms because you are actually pregnant, then there will be enough HCG in your system for a positive home pregnancy test.  But it's possible that the HPT you're using isn't sensitive enough to detect the level of HCG in your system.  First Response Early Result is a good test for testing early results.

  • This is exactly what happened to me!  To the T! And I got the response "Well, if you have enough hormones to have symptoms then you have enough to test positive".  This is not true, at least based on my first hand experience.

For about a week to a week and a half I was buying and testing like crazy!  I had the symptoms but no positive test.  And then, the day before my missed period, BANG BFP!

I have PCOS so my days are not regular either and I usually ovulate late or early if at all, but I knew what I was feeling.  Food aversion, tired, a bit emotional.  So, yes, it's possible.  Good luck to you!

Also, I hear that the PINK dye tests are better.  I did clear blue easy, but it showed up immediately when I did First Response

  • Yes, its possible. When is your period due? I'd wait a few days and test again.

With all of my pregnancies, I tend to get symptoms starting around 5-6DPO. I get nauseous and throw up. My nipples also get really sensitive.

  • I took two First Response tests and got negatives and then tested with EPT and got my BFP. I was having vivid dreams, breast tenderness and mild back pain before the BFP its possible you are I would try testing again with first urine of the day.

Unlikely because of these two quotes. Maybe, maybe the super irregular periods caused an early ovulation right after your period and you could've conceived but that doesn't bode well for egg quality. The follicle needs enough time to produce a mature egg that can be fertilized, implanted, and grow to term. Follicles that are too small aren't ideal for this. It's possible, but not a great start to things. Irregular periods could also be pointing toward other medical conditions with strange side effects.

Second, it's a negative pregnancy test. Maybe you used a bad test or diluted urine. But it's not looking likely.

Update though when you know. I'm curious to see how it goes for you.

To those saying the test would be positive if you had enough hcg to have symptoms, completely false. A lot of women know and have symptoms before a test confirms their feelings.
  • I had zero symptoms. I only tested because was due for a HSG on Monday and AF hadn't arrived. Complete surprise I would never have guessed it.

Go lurk on the trying to get pregnant board. TONS of women have "pregnancy symptoms" while waiting to test. Many of them aren't actually pregnant.

Sometimes they're excited and the symptoms are in their head. Sometimes the symptoms are caused by illness.

Symptoms of pregnancy are caused by HGC. If there is enough of that to cause symptoms, there is enough to turn a test. The hormone causes the symptoms. Nothing else. So if the hormone is there causing symptoms, it should turn a test.

If you get a positive test, you think that those "symptoms" were caused by the baby. If you don't, you know it was in your head.

  • I can't say its impossible, but if you don't have enough HCG to trigger today's super positive HPT then its unlikely the symptoms you are describing are related to pregnancy. The reason being that without enough hormone in your system to create the reactions to it. You can have these symptoms for other reasons than pregnancy.

The only symptom I had this time around prior to a positive test was round ligament pain/tightening after a very hard sneeze. I recognized it from my other pregnancies and decided to test. I've never experienced that sensation save for when I was pregnant and I turned out to be right. The rest didn't kick in until 6 weeks.

  • Those are the same symptoms I had before I got a bfp.  I took the first hpt test at 13 dpo and got a negative,  bfp at 14 dpo.  Take another test in a few days with fmu.  Good luck!
