doula?

I am only 9 weeks along right now but I'm currently on a temporary leave of absence from work for the next week or so, so I have too much time on my hands lol. I've been researching like crazy and I was wondering if anyone has had a doula in this area, who it was what she was like, and if she came to the hospital with you? I think that is what a doula does mostly is be in the hospital with you but I'm not sure. I would love to be one of those mom's who delivers at home but that isn't going to work, I'm too nervous lol. I hate pain and I always assumed I would have an epidural but now I'm reconsidering. I would love to have someone at the hospital helping me through with as little intervention as possible but also knowing when it is really necessary. I don't know if I need a doula but I think it would be nice. I'm thinking about delivering at Mercy since my OB is part of their network. Let me know if you have had one and what it is like. Thank you!

I don't know any Doula's who can help in the delivery room but I do know that a nanny agency called TLC For Kids has postpartum Doula's.  A friend of mine used a Doula and a night nanny from them.

    Good Luck!

  • Tara,

So glad to hear you are looking at having a doula - I wish more women did.  I also delivered at Mercy and towards the end of my pregnancy made the decision to go the route of least intervention.  I too would have loved to have a home birth, but I was too nervous about all of the "what ifs" and felt a hospital was a better environment for me.

I ended up having an incredible birth - spent almost all of my labor at home, arrived at the hospital 9 cm dialated, and my son was born within 3 hours of arriving.  No pain meds, no intervention, no anything - and it was awesome!  I would credit 90% of this to our incredible Katie.

Katie Mack (https://www.doulasofgreaterstlouis.com/directory/mack_k.html) was our doula for the birth of our little one and I CAN NOT explain how much of a God send she was.  Her fees included two prental sessions, unlimited emails, texts and phone calls throughout the pregnancy, coming over to the house in early labor, being at the hospital for the entire birth + a few hours postparum to help with breastfeeding, and then a follow up visit in the first week just to check in with everyone when we had been home.

Doulas of Greater St Louis is a great directory resource for all of the doulas in the area. Just make an appointment to interview with a few top picks and see who you connect with the best. Feel free to PM me with any other questions.
