Pregnant after a Loss

I'm back with an update

We ended up getting in to see my doctor, who is right next to the hospital.  They saw me right away.  The doctor gave me a vaginal exam and was surprised by the amount of blood I was losing.  I have been soaking pads since I woke up.

I had an ultrasound and they found that I have placenta previa.  My cervix is long and closed, so that is a good sign, but it's rare to have this much bleeding this early from a low-lying placenta.  It will hopefully correct itself to avoid preterm labor and potential complications to me.  Most cases DO correct themselves, but it's just weird to have so much bleeding this early- most people with placenta previa don't bleed until the beginning of their 3rd trimester.  I'm on bedrest this week, and am on pelvic rest for a while.  The baby looked great and was super active though.

I'm just so stressed right now, which I know is not good for the baby.  I'm not even going to log onto my work laptop.  For today I will just take it easy and hope that my placenta moves on it's own.  I am going for my big US next week, so he wants the other doctor to take a look.  If I start to bleed any heavier or cramp any more, he told me to go to the hospital. However, he expects me to bleed for a while and potentially spot for the rest of my pregnancy.

Thanks for the prayers and good thoughts.  Hopefully it will all work itself out.

Re: I'm back with an update

  • I am so glad the baby is ok.  I hope the bleeding stops and your previa corrects itself.

  • I am glad to hear that baby is okay. Take care of yourself and try and get lots of rest. I will be thinking of you.
  • i just read your first post and my first thought was "i wonder if she has a low placenta"?  I had the same thing with my second and also had heavy bleeding (clot like at times).  Take it easy.  Know that bleeding although scary and nerve wracking is very common.  The great majority of placentas do move, but maybe not until 28 or so weeks.  I'm sure yours will as well.  Hang in there!

  • Praying your placenta corrects itself and praying for you and baby gator.
  • I am so glad that the baby is fine.. hopefully the bed rest will help things out.
  • Whew, what a relief that the baby is OK and your cervix is closed!  That's the best news!

I hope the bleeding stops and the docs find a way to treat it!

  • That is good news! I have known quite a few people who have had Placenta Previa. My mom had it when she was pg with me and ended up on bedrest for awhile, but It really does correct itself in most cases.

  • Glad both you and baby are okay!

Just take it easy and relax today. I think you are doing the right thing by not working. Hopefully your placenta will move up on its own, and you don't have to deal with spotting for the next 4+ months. I know that would be stressful!

Big hugs & again, I am so happy baby is doing good!

  • Oh, wow. I am so sorry, Erica. I'd like to share a success story with you. One of my friends had placenta previa and began bleeding at about 13 or 14  weeks - I mean gushing blood. Dr's told her that she was miscarrying only to find out a few days later it was placenta previa. She went on bedrest for 2 weeks. After those 2 weeks she began bleeding again, so doc put her on bed rest for the rest of her pregnancy. So, although she was on bedrest for about 5 months, she carried her healthy little boy to term, and everything was just fine. She didn't have any other bleeding episodes after that. I hope that you don't have to be on bed rest for as long as she was, but just know that everything can and will be okay!
  • I'm glad your baby is ok and hopefully the placenta will move for you!  I hope you are able to relax a bit (easier said than done, I am sure)
  • Thank god the baby is ok. But I'm sorry that now you have to be so worried about the bleeding. I have heard that about 90% of placenta previa corrects itself by the time you deliver. Hang in there. We are thinking about you.

  • I'm sorry you are going through this.  My boss had the whole PP, early bleeding, PTL, etc. experience so it is good that you are proactive and aware.  I hope this doesn't happen for you, but keep on top of it!  Sending good thoughts your way.
