August 2013 Moms

Any Mamas registered for Fall courses?

Kindddda nervous about registering for classes. I'm considering only taking one online just to get something accomplished and I feel like as soon as LO is here, I'll find excuses to not go back to school.

My EDD is August 22nd. I'm finishing up two online classes on August 12th, while working FT until LO makes his appearance. Fall semester would start September 3rd. Not to mention, I'll be going back to work FT 4-6 weeks after LO arrives. Feeling a bit crazy!

Just wondering if any ladies are taking fall classes or if you have in the past with other LOs and how it went.

Re: Any Mamas registered for Fall courses?

  • I started when my daughter was 2 months old. I took 2 online classes at a time though, so it wasn't too bad. I definitely could not imagine going back to a classroom within a month of birth though.

    DEDICATION.  Jeez.

If I wasn't working FT in addition, I would just try and knock out a good portion of my classes. I have six left and can't WAIT to be done. But just a bit of cold feet committing to working and classes and being a FTM.

(Edit: Smiley guy didn't work! Edit again: just took him out. Sorry!)

I agree. Online is soooo much easier. I figure while we're getting used to LOs "schedule" I can squeeze whatever I need to in to get it done.

  • Two full days of interning and all day Saturday classes starting Sept 3, which comes to a 9 hr grad course load. Props to you @amarissa85! I'm worried about being motivated for my classes. I can't imagine 15 hrs.

I was going to register for 2 fall online course that start mid-August, but I was too late and all the courses were filled. Looks like I'll have to wait until Winter or Spring semester unfortunately.
Mid-August? Ugh. I'm happy I have at least until after Labor Day to start. Hopefully LO isn't too late. :P Good luck next semester though! :)

  • @pfftyouarenuts I couldn't take the whole semester off I would have driven me crazy. I also cannot take online courses due to my major so classes were kinda no option.

  • @amarissa85: what are you studying? I agree with petey. DEFINITELY super human! :)

2 fall classes online ..baby boy due Aug 7 and classes start Aug 19 but I won't be working at all for the first 4-8 weeks. How do some of you work full time, raise a baby and go to school..I need some of what you have lol

  • I am a biology pre med major. There are just too many labs with the associated classes.

I did it with my associate's degree. It isn't too bad if your kids are a bit older and a little self sufficient. They kind of entertained themselves while I studied and I would take homework with me to like sports practices.

  • I took two grad classes this summer so that I didn't have to take any in the fall and still will be on "schedule" that I set for myself. OMG.... 7 more grad classes feels like a ton and I'd love to do some online this fall, but I work FT and do entirely too much to commit to that the first few months of a new baby! @amarissa .... you're a beast! That's seriously commendable! Good luck, but if you're pre-med you're already good at time management! My pre-med classes were without baby (well, a food baby and a beer gut) and I barely held on. Props!
    Married DH <3 : 7/7/12; 3 fur babies (2 dogs and 1 cat)
DS born 9/3/13; DD born 7/22/15; LO due 5/28/18
FS (age 5) and FD (age 2) to become AS/AD very soon!

  • I'm stressed enough with DH going back the end of August. I could never go back to school right now, nor do I want to.

  • I am taking the semester off, as none of my remaining pre-requisite classes can be taken online. There is no way I can balance everything and actually go to a class on campus. So, I'm taking the semester off, and I will start taking classes again in January. With working and having a newborn, I didn't want to complicate things even more with having to go to class.

Of course, everyone is different! I just know how hard taking just two classes this summer was for me - I can't imagine having a newborn on top of everything else!

  • I have not but my SIL started nursing school exactly one week after my nephew was born. Luckily she had her mom to take care of the baby, but I couldn't even sit comfortably at that point after having DD so I don't know how she did it!

Ugh. I can't even handle labs. I'm awful with science. That's awesome though. Congrats and good luck! :)

I've had a pretty difficult time keeping my energy up with two classes this summer, that's why I was considering only doing one. That and it's an elective type course (Children's Literature). I figure I can keep myself content with reading to the little one.

  • I am going to be taking 9 credits online starting end of September. Also will start working probably 2 shifts a week in September. Baby is due in a week and a half, I just feel like if I take time off ill never go back!

I give you a lot of credit for doing this! I'm planning to start my online MSN next August while working FT with two kids an am already dreading it.

That sounds pretty doable. The classes I have left are science classes with labs, and I know I won't have the head for those. Two of them - Anatomy and Physiology II and Microbiology basically required hours of time memorizing. Since I know I'll be lacking in sleep, my memorizing capabilities will be significantly reduced. I figure I'll be better off taking them in January.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

  • I am! I'm due Aug 9 and my classes will start Aug 28. But it's my last semester before graduating so im taking 12 hours!!
    You can do it!
  • @coraggiosa I was thinking of taking micro in the spring. I am bouncing between that and genetics but I don't know which will be the lesser of the two evils stacked with chem 2. I totally understand about the memorization thing. I have somewhere around 800 flash cards for my bio II class. I heard micro was worse.

I loved Children's Lit! The way our class was set up, it was fairly easy (slightly time consuming, but easy) and reading all of the different types of children's books was a lot of fun. It shouldn't be too bad with a newborn.

  • Im a ftm and I have an induction scheduled August 8th ( my due date was July 28th). I start my full time on campus Master's program August 26th! I'm more nervous about school with a newborn than the actual birth!
  • I am taking a full course load (12 credits) that start Aug 26. My due date is Aug 27! YIKES!! Thankfully I already have the course schedules and syllabus and have started going over some stuff already. The classes are also all online which will help immensely. I'm still quite nervous for it though!

  • I go back sept 2nd full time. I'm determined to finish my masters by spring and don't want to take time off. Luckily they do offer online courses for my program so that's all I will be doing. I did email the professors in advance to let them know my first week might be a little rough and asked if I could get the syllabus in advance to start my coursework a little early.

This is me. Since this year is an internship year I either had to suck it up and do it or take the whole year off, which I knew meant I wouldn't go back. Not to mention, DH is waiting on me to finish before finding another job, one that he might actually like, so I feel the need to get done ASAP.

  • I finish my summer grad course the day I am due (the 7th), and then my fall grad schedule picks back up the third week of August.

I am grateful, though, that the summer course I am doing now finishes up the course material for my first grad degree, and all that will be left is the internship. Now, I can focus fall and spring semesters on finishing the coursework for the 2nd program.

@amarissa : 800 freaking cards to memorize? That's insane. It hurts my brain to think about.

I'm in the Early Childhood Ed. program, so I figure it's a good one to take regardless, but I love literature anyway. I tend to do really well in English related courses, so I figured it was a safe course to take :) I'll worry about my science in the Spring semester. :P

  • You ladies are really dedicated!  DS was born in a January, and I took the whole Spring semester off and started back in May.  For me, the most challenging part was working breastfeeding and pumping around classes.  Online classes are definitely ideal for the flexibility!

@amarissa85 What a choice! I honestly have no idea which is worse since I don't have to take genetics. Although I wouldn't want to be pairing anything with Chem 2 - I hate chemistry. Thank God I took it in undergrad and I don't need to retake it. I had SO many flashcards with my A&P 1 class, that I'm a little scared to take both A&P 2 and Micro at the same time. Good luck figuring out your schedule!
