Cat Bite Update

Sorry this took so long.

Quick summary for those who missed my earlier post: My husband was bitten by my parents/brothers cat on Friday night. He had 11 puncture wounds and by Saturday night it was obviously infected. His whole right hand was swollen and he had streaking past his elbow. We went to the ER and he was admitted with a diagnosis of cellulitis.

My husband was discharged Sunday at 6pm after 4 rounds of IV antibiotics. He now has barely any swelling. We will be following up with his pcp on Friday.

My parents have offered to pay any medical bills not covered by our insurance. My husband doesn't want to accept their help with the bills. I think we need to because right now we are in a rough spot finanicially.

The cat. My parents don't want the cat. They didn't want her before this happened. My brother refuses to take her and refuses to let them re-home her and do what my mother thinks needs to be done (euthanize).

I am nervous about the cat being around Elijah. She has major anxiety issues and they aren't getting better. In fact they have gotten worse as she gets older. She is now 14 and and is living in a room by herself because she freaks out if she is around humans or other cats. She also has been peeing everywhere. I had just taken her to the vet on Friday and they couldn't examine her because she wouldn't let them near her. However, they did prescribe an anti-anxiety medication, which you can't get into the cat because she won't let anyone near her.

I don't like the idea of euthanizing animals that aren't already dying/in pain, but I don't know if there is anything that can be done to help this cat. Luckily the decision is not mine.

Re: Cat Bite Update

  • Sometimes it's better for all involved (including the cat) if they are sent to animal heaven.  It is hard and sucks to think about - but it's better in the long run.

The alternatives are really horrible to think about as well.  What if it does get near your son.  I hate to even think about it.

  • Glad your husband is doing better. It's crazy that he had to spend two nights at the hospital. I feel so bad for him, and you!!

I would be super nervous about the cat being around my LO too if I were you. I'm nervous w Bailey around any animals, I don't know if I could handle having her around a crazy cat.

I do also feel really bad for the cat. I think your brother should step up and take it if he won't let them find it a new home. It's not fair to your parents at all.

  • I'm really glad your husband is doing better.

That is a shitty situation.... I'd be a ball of stress just thinking about what it could do to LO.

  • I'm glad your husband is doing much better.  I would also not want my LO around a crazy cat, especially if the cat had attacked my Husband.  Hope your parents can find a solution soon.
