January 2014 Moms

Runners, joggers and waddlers :)

How is the jogging progressing ladies? I've had a few long runs this past week where I don't even remember I'm pregnant and feel great. I do feel that the next day must be a rest or extremely short day though. What are your findings since our last check in?

Re: Runners, joggers and waddlers :)

  • Heartrate is a huge issue for me. Even PP My heartrate was in the 170s and 180s when I ran. That makes me nervous now, so I run until I get to 170, walk until 140 and then run again. It's pitiful.

I need to take it slow.  I've been able to do 3-3.5 miles at a time.  But I definitely feel it later in the day and the next day so I try to work out every other day.  My knees also got sore on my last run, and I'm not sure if it's pregnancy related or the fact my shoes are shot.  Just to eliminate that possibility, I bought new running sneakers and am excited to try them out!

I run 2-3 miles 3 times per week. Not much but it's something. And a 1 mile walk every day. So far so good! I did a 5K a few weekends ago and have another one next weekend!

I hear this! I've changed to this too, I do a very light walk with little 3 lb weights for arm toning or take in a zumba class on rest days.

runrun26.2 you are my hero! LOL. I think what you said about really trying to push through 1st tri fatigue is right. Some of those fatigue days seemed to be days that really should make me stop but there were other days that when I pushed through fatigue things felt great. I should have tried more days though that I didn't attempt a jog/walk at all. THose days could have helped my base more at this point I think. Good for you!

  • Didn't get my run in today like I'd hoped so I'm gonna try for tomorrow after work. I haven't been wearing my HRM but I'm thinking I need to pull it back out just to be safe. I didn't run at all during first pregnancy as this running thing is all very new to me. But I'm enjoying seeing that I'm very much capable of staying active and it doesn't hurt me or baby!

  • I know I probably sound like a broken record, but the 140 heart rate shouldn't be a concern.

"If you exercised regularly before pregnancy, there's no need to focus on your heart rate for exercise during pregnancy.

Years ago, some experts recommended a heart rate of no more than 140 beats a minute for exercise during pregnancy. Today, however, heart rate limits aren't typically imposed during pregnancy. For healthy women, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity — preferably spread throughout the week — without any specific heart rate limits."

  • My OB says the recommendation changed to 160 bpm recently (it was 140 at my last PG).  In any event, I agree, if you were active before, don't fixate.  That said, I don't hit above 150 these days just because my stamina is reduced.  I'm down from 10 miles a day to 5, but that's loads better than my 1st time around so I'm not complaining

  • I just ran for the second time today! I was a huge racer 5k through halfs pre pregnancy. I was too worried first tri to run (due to previous losses) but now I'm working my way back into it. Today I ran/walked. Half mile run, break, 1/3 mile run, etc. I think I ran 1.6 out of two miles. I'd like to try to work back up to running 3 miles total if possible...possibly with no stops. I was pretty happy with today though!

  • For me, it is really hard to exercise with out getting my heart rate over 140.

  • I'm still mostly on the elliptical. I don't pay much attention to distance there because they seems o wonky. I try to do 35-45 minutes 3x a week. And I lift on those days, too. Since the weather has been so nice, DH also takes a walk with me as a cool down after his run.

The last time I ran outside and got too hot, I felt terrible all night and didn't sleep well. That was early June. I'm feeling much better overall but still scared to have that happen again. I'm so sad to be scared to run. :( Maybe in the fall I will work up the nerve again...

I jog/run just over 3 miles, 3-4 times a week. Didn't do anything 1st tri due to morning sickness. First pregnancy I ran until week 32 then walked until week 35 when I had to cut out exercise due to hypertension. Second pregnancy I didn't exercise (DH was traveling and it was hard to fit in). This time, I'm happy to have found a way to fit it into my daily schedule.

  • I did a nature walk this weekend! First exercise I had had in a while (post BR) and my heart rate wasn't too bad until the end with an incline (it gets scary fast and hard).

I am only responding to report that I have decided to sign up for the LA Marathon again this year (did it a month before I got PG) and I know I wont have time to train for it, and will be 2 months out from a C Section, but I hope to walk it with maybe a short jog in there. I know it will take me like, 7 hours, but it is important to me.
