Clomid users please weigh in..

Back story: I have PCOS and am annovulatory.  I was seeing another OB to get pregnant with my daughter, Mila. To get me pregnant, they put me on BC for 3 months to regulate my pd. I went off it for one month, got my period that first month and took clomid and luckily got pregnant on the first round. I switched OBs because I didn't like the nurses at my old one. So fast forward to my appt today with my "new OB" (new as in, they didn't help me get pregnant last time, but they were my OB throughout my pregnancy). I thought they'd let me do the same thing, go off BC next month, get my pd, start clomid. No. They want me to be off BC for three months, then will test my levels in Oct/Nov. to see if I ovulated in those 3 months. If I did ovulate, we'll have to try "on our own" for 3-6 months. If I didn't ovulate, she'll allow me to take clomid. Here's the thing though.. because I have PCOS, BC regulates me and I DO get my pd the first month. But the longer I'm off BC, the more screwed up my cycle gets and I end up bleeding for 90+ days without a real period. I'm going to miss my time frame next month because that will be the only time I get my period on my own. I'm so upset. I even said "Can we try on our own these next 3 months while I wait for blood work?" and she had the nerve to tell me no because she likes all patients to be off BC for at least 3 months before getting pregnant. This is not fair. With my past and it already being proven that I don't ovulate on my own, I don't understand why we have to go through this process again.  Is this normal to have to get blood work and go through this entire process each we decide to TTC?  I'm thinking about going back to the dr that got me pregnant the first time for a second opinion.

  • Did you ask her why she wanted you to wait the 3 months?  I don't know any reason why you should have to wait.  Maybe someone else does.  I would go back to your original doctor, get ku again and then you can come back.

  • I'm not sure honestly, April.  From what I got, she is really reluctant to hand out clomid (I totally get that..) but in MY case, I needed it before and my history over the past year after my daughter (bleeding non-stop, d&c to remove thick lining and polyps because of my excess estrogen, needing to be on BC to regulate my pd) it's obvious that I'm still having the same issues as I was before getting pregnant with my first.  She wants the 3 months to see what my cycles are like and to see if I ovulated at least once in those 3 cycles before giving me clomid.  Here's the thing though.. she actually wrote and handed me the script of clomid at my appointment this morning.  She gave it to me so I don't have to come back after I get my blood work in 3 months (barring that I don't ovulate and do in fact need clomid).  Talk about temptation to just get it filled next month if I get my period.. hah.  I couldn't do that though because if it didn't work, I'd have to face her.  Plus I really want monitoring on it.

  • Ugh, tough one... My bf has pcos and if she were in your situation I'd encourage her to go back to original ob. She too dod testing, had super irregular and sometimes month to months long periods. put her on clomid, first month pregnant. There is no reason, with your history, to put you thorough months of testing, more waiting, more trying, just so they can check a box. That box has been checked and historically for you, you have a proven result. Why mess with it? Why wouldn't they do what worked first, and if doesn't, try something else? I get they have to be thorough, but sometimes I think they are just cya. Can you stand the nurses enough? Or were they that bad? I out up with a spiteful one to stick with my OB, wasn't easy, hope it it works out, I'm a little riled up today, so ticked for you.

  • Momarazzi, EXACTLY.  Why try to mess with something that worked so well the first time?  I know what's going to happen.  I'm going to get my period next month and then after that, I'll bleed on and off for months straight.  My lining will build up again since I'm not ovulating and I'll end up having to have another d&c and go on BC to regulate once again and push back TTC a few more months.  It's ridiculous.  I wanted to wait for #2 until we knew for SURE we were ready, instead of starting ASAP in anticipation that it would take awhile.  Now I wish we would've just started months ago.

  • Hi there... I think I would certainly at least go back to your original doctor for a 2nd opinion.  Especially since they have your previous history and what did work.  I wish you lots of luck!

If it were me, I would go back to your original OB. You already have a documented history of what has worked for you and IF can be a long journey; I wouldn't want to be wasting time sitting around waiting for a go ahead if I could get the help I needed sooner. Good luck either way!

Go back to old OB - and do what worked first time around. If it doesn't work THIS time around then I would either a.) go back to this dr. or B.) find a different doctor altogether.

Someone else said it right. IF is too intense to be jacking around. If you know your body then listen to it. that's my take.

Best of luck to you, whatever you decide.
