Cat problems TMI?

My cat has a UTI and it seems like its never going away. For anyone that has cats, you know how frustrating UTIs can be. She pees everywhere and it's bloody, and when we took her to the vet all he did was give us some meds for $200 that DIDN'T work, and caused her to puke everywhere as well. We've tried everything with her and idk what to do now!

We can't keep taking her to a vet for $200 and we also can't be in a house with cat piss everywhere (we do clean it up but you know what I mean). I just keep thinking that our baby is going to be crawling on these floors and that's gross!

*sigh* Anyone have any advice? TIA

Re: Cat problems TMI?

  • My cat has to eat special food because of urinary tract problems.  Did your vet mention anything about changing its diet?  We feed ours Purina Urinary Tract Health.

  • Is he SURE that it's a UTI?  We have a cat that was doing that, but it turns out she has Crystals.  We had to change her to a pricey prescription food to make it clear up, but overall, it HAS worked.  We had a male cat that also had crystals (a year or so before we got her) & he had to be put down b/c he couldn't stay un-blocked long enough for any special foods, & his kidneys started to fail).  Does she have water available all day, b/c if she doesn't drink enough, UTI or not, she won't be flushing her system, & the pain will never really go away, & they associate the pain with the litter box.  Did you also try putting extra litter boxes down, in case maybe she's associating her normal one with the pain?

Very sorry, cats are tricky to handle & outsmart sometimes, & yeah, the bills can be killer.  Our male cat cost us over $700 before we had to put him down, & our female has cost us just about the same, but if she keeps eating the special food, she will probably make it.  On the other hand, if your cat is really in pain, & the vet just can't help, then for her own pain relief, it might be better to put her down, although that's always so very hard to do, even when it's so they won't hurt anymore.  GL.  Wish I could help.
  • The vet I saw said nothing about diet! I think I'll start giving her the food you guys suggested and I've been giving her distilled water as well. Friday we're seeing a new vet so hopefully that will be a good visit :/
  • He said there was a possibility of crystals but never did anything. Hopefully this new vet can help!
  • It could be kidneys could it not? Or is that ruled out? I was thinking crystals also. I had a male cat who had crystals and it was so awful, poor guy. Luckily with a diet change and the right combo of meds, and $500 later, he was just fine.

I would go to another vet. Even the vet college if you have one near. They are generally cheaper and I find students more thorough actually.
  • Wow.  They can check for crystals in just a pee sample!  He should have checked for that!  They have some special plastic litter that they can give you a bag of, then I put down a clean potty with a garbage bag on the bottom & I scattered the plastic litter on top, then took the little syringe they gave me, sucked up some of her pee after she went, took it into them immediately (it's gotta be done pronto), & they stuck it under the microscope & saw Crystals.  It's NOT a huge test, so...wow.  Yeah, maybe check for another vet.

We have to feed ours a Science Diet we have to buy from the vet, but they eat less of that than the cheap stuff, so when we buy a bag of it, yeah, it's like $36 or something, & it's small, but, it lasts her several months usually, so...it's pricey maintenance, but it's either that or putting her down.
  • The Purina is only $17 compared to the Vet food and it does the same thing or at least it works.

  • I'm glad she's seeing a vet. Even though the last meds didn't work, that's what she needs right now. Hopefully the next round of meds works, since UTIs are painful. Poor baby.

Changing the food is a good idea. Other things to try:

Invest in a black light and find all her pee spots. Use an enzymatic cleaner for animal pee to clean them till they're gone.

Until she's healthy, restrict her to a bathroom to save your floors.

Use cat attract litter. She may associate the litter box with the pain of urination and that can help the poor thing feel like trying again.

I know you can't afford constant meds, but you've only tried one round and you can't leave her like this. Give her three rounds of mess before you feel this is chronic. Poor thing is hurting now and needs help! I hope the new vet can fix her.
