Secondary IF

Intro and Question for those who are using IF for the 2nd time

Hi! DH and I have a 16 month old daughter.  We tried to conceive naturally for about 9 months and then was referred to the RE because my cycles were so abnormal.  We went through the whole 9 yards as far as diagnostic testing goes and found out that I have PCOS and DH has low motility.  DD was finally conceived through IUI.  We were thinking about trying to have another child soon, maybe this fall or winter, and I was looking for some advice about the process the second time around.  Do we have to go through all of the testing again? Can I just call the RE and schedule an appointment and get right to doing another IUI?  I am just curious what other people's experiences have been the second (or third, or fourth) time around.

Re: Intro and Question for those who are using IF for the 2nd time

  • I am just doing Fertility Treaments for the first time but I would just call the RE who you saw last time and ask them what you should do.  They will tell you if you can just come to see them or if you should do something else.

  • We just went back to our new RE after our surrogate baby. We had to be re-referred but we got to front of line & didn't have to wait again. (Our clinic is very busy)

  • The second time was not as stressful.  I knew all the procedures and what to expect.  I also didn't have to fill out as much paperwork because they still had it on file.  However, we started to go in March and still haven't had a cycle with meds because they kept saying I was fine and then changing mind and saying I had to do another step.  ARGH!  Same doctors, different nurses.  When I finally get to start, they are starting me on the same meds/dose that I conceived instead of having to try the different ones and doses.
  • Hope you don't mind a grad popping in (ticker warning). We used our OB the first time around and conceived DS. The second time we used our OB, she didnt repeat any tests just prescribed what worked the first time. When we eventually moved to an RE he repeated a lot of the tests, mostly bloodwork. He didnt make me repeat the HSG, but did some other tests I hadn't had before. I figure it will be different for everyone, but hopefully you can skip a few tests and jump back into what works. Unfortunately, for us the first month of clomid worked and then we ended up doing 2 IVFs the second time. Just never know. Good luck to you!
