CD and clothing detergent?

What detergent do you ladies use for your LOs? I posted this on the cd board but you ladies re my favourites. So I was thinking of using ivory baby snow detergent for clothes and Kirkland free and clear for CDs regular washes. I have prefolds and some NB and OS, AIO PUL dipes if that changes things.

I will get some rockin green for stripping. Since I'm a ftm am I setting myself to fail or does this sound relatively okay?

For the CDs, I was thinking to start with a cold rinse, no soap, hot wash with detergent then cold rinse (or two) no soap.

TIA for your advice!

Re: CD and clothing detergent?

  • I switched to Charlie's Soap about a year and a half ago and use that for all laundry. It's good for CDs and everything else, and ideally, you aren't to switch back and forth anyway if you use Charlie's. Before that, I used Purex F&C on diapers and baby clothes, I think, while we still had Tide liquid.

Your projected CD wash routine should work. That is pretty much what I do, though I have needed to make my water very hot to get a good wash with some used diapers I have.

  • I used Country Save on all of our clothes and cloth diapers for quite a while. Then, DD started solids and we got major stink issues. I finally switched to Original Tide for CDs, and I'm much happier. We are still using Country Save for clothes, but I might be lazy and switch everything to Tide once we run out.

For diaper stripping I have Blue Dawn, Rockin Green, and bleach. I use whatever is needed based on issues that arise.

Our CD washing is cold was/rinse no soap, hot wash/cold rinse with 2-3 TBSP of Tide, cold rinse. Ever since having issues when DD started solids and started sleeping longer at night, I add 1/4 cup bleach once a month to the wash cycle and then do 2 extra rinses as per BG recommendations.
    Mommy to N (3), J (2), and C (10 months). LO4 is due in mid-September.

We use the Bum Genius brand detergent and each box lasts a long time. A little goes a long way. You can find it on the cotton babies website. It ships for free and is the best for cloth diapers that we have found.
We use All Free and clear for our clothing.
Believe me you do not want to wash your own clothes together with the diapers as the smell can be strong when you put them in the wash. We do a cold pre-wash followed with a hot wash for the diapers whereas we only wash with cold water for our own clothes.
  • Original Tide for diapers and home made laundry detergent (Michelle Duggar's Recipe) for all of our clothes.

  • FTM, but I'm starting my CDs with All Free & Clear (because I had already bought it and I read some good reviews online), later I'll probably try tide original based on the fact that 80% of the CD moms I know IRL recommend it.

I prepped mine (Charlie banana pockets) last week. I did a cold rinse/spin followed by hot/cold wash cycle with just 2 tbsp of the All f&c. I have thirsties covers for infant prefolds that my cousin gave me (so already prepped) and flannel wipes that I just washed with the rest of her clothes (cold/cold wash cycle) using the All.

  • I just recently switched to ecosprout and add some tea tree oil to it. It's been working great for me.

  • Thanks ladies! This is super helpful :)
  • I used rockin green but had to switch because of ammonia problems. We have been using Charlie's for over a year and I lie it a lot. We've always used All Free and Clear on our clothes so I didn't change that. I know technically Charlie's doesn't like switching, but I haven't seen any problems.
  • For clothes, we all use the same detergent - whatever I happen to buy. Right now its Arm & Hammer. For CDs, I tried Rockin' Green and didn't like it. So now we use Tide Original Powder. Nooooo stink issues since switching to Tide! I could use Tide for our clothes but I wash clothes in cold and cold water doesn't always dissolve powder detergents well. Then I break out in hives. Then I get angry and itchy. So we leave the Tide to the CDs (which are washed in hot).

  • This may help you.  I am a FTM so I don't have experience with how well a detergent works on CD.  Also, be sure to look at the warranties/guarantees from the diapers you have.  If you do not use the detergent they recommend some manufacturers void their warranty.  I think I plan to use Rockin' Green for CD and All FC for clothing since that is what I already use for DH and I.
