Success after IF

Naps

My boys will be starting daycare in three weeks and this is a last minute change in what we had originally planned. My boys sleep great at night, but for naps they only sleep on us or in their swing. I've been putting them in their cribs for their afternoon naps and it goes so so. I put them down for a nap when they show me their tired ques. I've tried putting them down drowsy but awake. I've put them down a sleep but they always wake up five minutes later. Any suggestions, advice, tips?

Re: Naps

  • It sounds like you are doing all the "right" things. The girls just turned two months, and at this point they nap wherever works - swing, Boppy, bouncy chair. I keep them in the room with me for most naps. At night they sleep in the PNP and put themselves to sleep. They wake up once to eat and again go right back to sleep on their own. So I am not to worried about where they nap right now. They say the morning nap is the first to develop so maybe try to get that nap in the crib consistently first.

It wasn't until 3-4 months that H started napping in a specific place every single time. He was almost always in the swing up until that point, but also slept on me and the bouncy. If I tried putting him the crib at that age, he would also wake up and cry until I got him out.

Daycare will figure something out that works. Mine actually puts all babies to sleep in a bouncy seat in the crib until they can roll both ways easily, then they get to sleep directly in the crib. Also, when H is home with me, he naps a lot. He usually does 3-4 naps a day at an hour and a half to two hours each. At daycare, he's lucky to get one good nap like that in. It's usually two naps under an hour each, so it may not even matter where your boys sleep if this turns out to be the same. I think there's just so much going on, and now that H plays, there's others to play with and he just doesn't nap.

  • DD was a terrible napper until almost 7 months. Her naps could last 5 to 30 minutes, but rarely longer. Eventually she just started lengthening them on her own. Just keep doing what you're doing and eventually they'll figure it out.

  • I am still at the same point as you and we will be hitting 4 months soon! No advice here except to ditto PP that try the first nap first, DD takes her first nap one hour after she wakes up, like clockwork. GL!

E was a terrible napper at home, but napped great at DC. They let her sleep in a bouncer there and she even climbs into it herself when she's ready for her bottle and nap. She never liked her bouncer at home and doesn't go down that easily for naps at home. Don't worry about it. You're doing great, and they will be fine!

  • Thanks ladies! I'll take easy and not worry too much about it. It sounds like daycare will tire them out.
