GD/Glucose test question

I took the 1 hour glucose test yesterday and haven't heard back yet.  But I did check my online chart and it looks like I was 9 points over.  BOO!!!!  Last time with Jack I was only 3 points over and had to take the 3 hour test.  It was miserable, as I'm sure a lot of you know.  I was so sick to my stomach, and nearly passed out.  I did, however, pass that test.

I'm wondering if any of you declined the 3 hour test and what you did about your diet.  I'm thinking of asking to not do the 3 hour test and just adhering to the GD diet anyway.  But I don't really know what that entails, and if I'd have to do blood sugar checks, etc.  Mostly I just know the 3 hour test will suck, I'll have to find a babysitter who can watch J for that long (meaning my mom, who has a busy schedule recently), and I could probably stand to eat a little healthier anyway.  Am I just being dumb?

Re: GD/Glucose test question

  • You could follow the GD diet -- it's not that hard. That said, I wouldn't do it, since the blood sugar checks are a major PITA. It's like 5 or 6 sticks a day, IIRC, and you have to eat on a schedule. So, personally, I would just suck it up and take the 3-hour. Sorry. :( I hope it won't be as bad for you this time around! You can always talk to your doctor and see what he/she advises, though.

  • You're probably right. :( I see my dr on Wednesday, so I'll see what she says, but I have a feeling she'll tell me to just suck it up and do the 3 hour. lol

  • Can you ask for the two hour test? That's what my doc does now instead of two tests. I guess it's more accurate since so many people fail the one hour but pass the three hour.

  • Hmm. I already took the 1 hour, and if the 2 hour replaces both tests then its probably too late.  But I'll ask about it!  I didn't even know there was a 2 hour test!

Apparently I'm even subconsciously worried about this because last night I had a dream that I went to my OB appointment.  I had a starbucks frap with me, and my OB took it away from me and said no more coffees and you have to take a 5 hour test.
    :((

  • my OB does the two hour test as well. there is no screening.
ill be honest and say it was a nice break from parenting though.  i took a bunch of magazines i had been wanting to read and tried to enjoy that no-one was climbing on or yelling at me.
  • I didn't have GD, but my BFF did.  I would suck it up and take the 3 hour test so you can avoid having to do all the GD-related stuff.  I don't remember everything that she had to do, but I know she was pretty miserable.

  • Thanks for the advice, ladies! I didn't realize it was such a huge pain to deal with GD. A nurse from my OB office called today and said I do have to take the 3 hour. :P Your responses encouraged me to just say, "boo, ok."

So Thursday morning maybe I'll make a billion threads to entertain myself.
