Daycare question

So after the out of work roller coaster I've been on since I quite my job in December I have finally been offered a FT temp to hire position that seems awesome and the pay is better than I expected.  Now I have to hurry and find DD a good DC.  Currently I am working nights and DH days, so we've managed to to either have one of us home or my retired FIL has taken her for a few hours in the interim, but he can't watch her FT.

Anyway, I'm so out of the loop now that DD is nearly 7 months older than she was last in DC.  What new questions should I ask.  For example what sorts of things should I find out about PTing?  Any advice would be marvelous.

I told DD that if I got a job that she could start going to school again and she got so excited.  I'm taking her on 2 visits tomorrow, one by my new work and one by DH's work.

Re: Daycare question

  • For potty-training, they have more experience than me, so I'd like to know how they do it! But also how often they go, how they reward, and when they decide to start? do they do cold turkey, or diaper for naps?

I would also want to know more about...
curriculum - what kind of play, how much outside time?
food - what's a typical menu, can it be brought from home, pro or anti-cupcake/birthday treats?
discipline - how & why - maybe with some what if scenarios
teachers - who and how many? credentials/experience?
parent stuff - communication with parents - how? pick-up/drop-off convenience? hours/holidays mesh with yours?
    sick kid policies/illness prevention?

That's all I can think of right now.

  • In addition to everything kenandkendra listed I would ask about

    staff turnover
    CPR and firstaid certification
Allergy proceders (if that is an issue for you)
Ratios- this is good info for you to know

I feel like I'm missing some questions but you have the basics that should lead to any other issues or concerns you might have.

@jarebearsmom - you used to work at a center. Am I missing any biggies?

PPs have it covered, but you might ask where/how DD will be placed and how they will assess that. Our DC seems to be assessing kids that are on the cusp in cooperation with the parents and placing them in the appropriate levels now.  As infants, it was just the infant room, kwim?

Congrats on the job, I'm SO happy for you!!

Don't forget to ask about the older classrooms. Before you know it she will be in preschool and you'll want the best one around without having to move her. A couple of my girlfriends have their younger kids in our daycare only to make sure they get into the preschool and pre-k classrooms because they are so good.
