Night time sleeping

It seems that my LO has his days and nights straight, so far as he only wakes to feed at night and goes right back to sleep. He doesn't stay awake. However, he still wakes ever 3 hours to feed throughout the day and night. How long are your littles sleeping and any recommendations on how I can help mine to sleep for longer periods at night? Seems like I've seen a lot of people mentioning theirs are sleeping long periods.... My LO is 6 weeks old. TIA!!

Re: Night time sleeping

  • No advice, just sympathy! My LO has had 2 4 hour stretches in his whole life, but that's way outside the norm. My DS1 didn't sleep more than 5 hours until he was 1 year old!! So that's what I'm prepared for...realizing now this isn't really helpful, sorry

Haha, well it's always nice to commiserate. Also, probably good pointing out that this might not change for me for a very long time :-/
  • on average O will only wake up twice. We go to bed at 830 pm and he eats around 11 or 1130 pm. He then will wake up again about 230 or 3 am, and then he gets up for good around 630 or 7 am.
DS 2 didn't sleep through the night until after he was 2 or so. I breastfed him until 18 months. He is 6 and still wakes up in the middle of the night for water, or whatever. DS1 was the same...it was well after the age of 1 that he finally started to sleep through the night. I am mentally preparing myself that O will be the same. If not- it will be wonderful!

  • My lo still wakes every 2 hours at night, but goes back down really fast. It stinks I'm hoping it ends fast! I feel your pain!

Not sure if this is helpful or not, but LO had a major growth spurt and at the advice of a wonderful doula, she recommended I supplement with formula for the time being  until my supply kicked up.
I noticed with one bottle of formula as the last feed (or dream feed), it sustained LO longer through the night.  If you really need some sleep, maybe you would like to try just one bottle?
If you're well rested, then even better to conquer the day!

Mine has a 3 hour nap after her morning feed. After that she doesn't really nap for substantial time, if at all. She then usually sleeps 4-5 hours for night, and we had some 6 hour and two sttn!
  • DS usually goes down about 10:30-11 and sleeps 3 hours (4 if I'm lucky). Then up to feed, diaper change and a top off which puts him back to sleep. Then he's up again 2-2.5 hours later to eat and usually right back to sleep for another hour or 2. He wakes up for the day at 6, but will usually go back down for a nap at 7 so we hang out in bed and I go back to sleep for 1.5-2 hours while he naps on my chest. I don't expect him to sttn for awhile, he just likes to eat so much!

  • No advice really, just wanted to let you know you're not alone! Normally my LO wakes every 3 hours or so at night, but last night she STTN! The last caffeine I had yesterday was early afternoon, so I am going to cut out the soda for a few days and see if this becomes her new pattern. The only thing that sucked about it was that my boobs were bursting when she woke to eat at 6 - literally had wet the bed.
  • Sadly, that's pretty normal.  DD2 is six weeks today, and we still get up 3x a night.   If I'm remembering correctly, DD1 nursed that frequently for 3-4 months, so I'm keeping expectations low right now.  I'm just grateful that she normally settles right back down after 10-15 minutes.

I used to change and feed baby whenever he woke up during the night which was about every three hours. Then I started just giving him a pacifier and most of the time he goes right back to sleep for another hour or two. Since doing that he has started sleeping for longer stretches. I know when he's really hungry or needs changed because he won't go right back to sleep with the pacifier. Good luck!

This sounds exactly like our LO's schedule too! Its taking a toll now that I'm back at work and have to stay up. Through in there a 2.5 yr old and some nights I just don't sleep. I know its not helpful but I feel your pain!
