Difficult Naptime

Anyone else's LO suddenly hate naps or having more difficulty with them? Weird thing is that DS is fine at daycare. They say he goes down just fine there, but on the weekends he wails when we put him down and screams "No! No! No!" We've resorted to getting him out of the crib and lying down with him once or twice when he's fought it for 30+ minutes and that's hit or miss - one time he laid down with DH and napped. The other time, I tried it and he just wanted to play so he never took a nap that day.

Just curious is anyone else is experiencing this or has tips. His night-time sleep is the same, or maybe even better, so it's just the naps that seem to be a problem.

Re: Difficult Naptime

  • Ah I could have written this same thing.  I am always complimented at daycare about how easy DS goes down for a nap.  At home he fights it about 50% of the time.  I keep him on the same schedule as daycare so I don't have a clue what I am doing wrong.  The only thing I can think is that we don't wear him out enough.

E began fighting nap time so I started letting her chose two books to bring into her crib with her. She will babble to herself and look at the books for about 15-30 minutes before falling asleep. I know this probably won't work for everyone, but thought I would share.

  • DS has been weird sometimes, I think it might have to do with either being over tired or he's teething. If he doesn't go to sleep after 30 minutes I go in to check to make sure he didn't poop! If he did I change him and put him back down or I will leave him in there. I hope he doesn't stop wanting a nap because that's my mommy time!

We don't have any screaming at nap time, DS just thinks its play time! He will kick around for such a long time before finally giving in. It's funny and I also would be upset if he quit taking naps. I love having me time.
  • Thanks ladies! I also worry that we don't tire him out like daycare! But then it seems like a day when we've really done a lot he can get overtired and we still have problems. I think I'll try the book idea, might be enough to distract him from freaking out long enough to lie down and nod off for a nap. ...and yes, WORST thing is when it turns out he's pooped, then I feel like I've just lost the battle!

  • Same exact situation here for both kids!  At daycare they sleep like champs and at home on the weekends I feel like supermom if I can get one to nap!  On Saturday neither napped - but they both had quiet time and on Sunday only C napped, but for an hour in the car.

I still try and put them down at their normal nap time and call it quiet time.  Both will have books in their crib/bed and if they sleep great - if not at least momma has some quiet time :)  But usually they both end up not sleeping.  Crazy how daycare can do it so easily!

  • We have the same problem- Ds will go down like magic on a nap mat no less at Daycare, but gives me so much trouble at home.  Have tried everything- offered a nap mat at home- NOPE.  He either gets in his crib and screams or just plays around, but will do so for more than an hour.  Its so weird, but yes this has resulted in days with no nap and I dislike those days immensly.

  • As usual, misery loves company. Makes me feel better to know I'm not alone! I make him do quiet time as well when he REALLY won't do a nap, but even that sometimes doesn't go over so well. These little toddlers have some will power!
