Pumping rebellion!

Is it possible to train my body to express breast milk only at certain times of the day? I am a teacher and headed back to work next week, but I don't want to pump during the day. The only time I would even get to pump would be my lunch break. And I only get 20 mins for lunch, and would have to pump in a closet. I'm less than thrilled about having to sit in a closet to pump and eat my lunch in only a 20 min period. Of course I will if my breasts become too full or engorged, but I'm hoping to get myself on a schedule. LO is making the transition to formula so I'm hoping to nurse in the morning, after school, and thru the night, with LO taking formula during the day. Has anyone transitioned to this type of schedule? Pumping at work just seems so inconvenient.

  • I don't have any experience myself but I've been told your body will adjust. However, since you're going back next week, it may be a painful adjustment because everyone has told me to wean your body slowly by dropping one feeding every week. How many times does LO eat during the hours you'll be gone? Maybe you could start today and drop a feeding/pumping session everyday.

FWIW, I know you don't want to pump in a closet, and may not want to pump at all, but I'm a teacher to and they're required to give you additional breaks, not your lunch, if you are pumping.

  • The first few days may be uncomfortable, but yes you should be able to transition to not needing to pump at school. If you want to get there before school starts I would stop nursing during the day and start pumping, then space the pumping times out a bit each day until you can go the full time needed. Expect to wear pads for any leaking for a while though.

It would probably be the same as if LO started to sleep all night.

I agree with NandaB - I would try dropping a feeding for a couple days before going back to work. I'm only able to pump 2x while at work. I really wish it could be 3x, but I don't have the time ... Anyway, your body will adjust. Do be prepared for your supply to drop with the change. I know it's not that way for everyone, but I have unfortunately had a significant drop in my supply because of my wonky pumping schedule at work.
Myles was so pumped about the baby . . . until he figured out he'd have to share all his toys!!!

  • I too am a teacher and am going back to work in mid August- I contacted my admin to see when my prep hour and lunch would be because that's when I plan to pump in my classroom. I'm struggling to stop my 2am pumping. LO sleeps 9pm-5:30am so I would like to pump at 9:30 and then 5:30, any tips to how to get myself through the night?!?!?!
