How Many Oz?

I am just now going back to work (LO is 8 weeks) and I pump breast milk to give to him while i'm gone. I am not sure however, how much milk he should be taking.

I've seen things that say 1 oz for each hour... so 3 oz every 3hrs. But my LO seems to eat closer to 5-6oz every 3 hours and sometimes he seems like he is not full. I'm not sure I will be able to pump enough to keep up at this rate.

Is it possible that LO eats too fast and he doesnt realize he is not hungry anymore. Sometimes he does spit up a good bit, but not always. I'm just so confused. How much are your LOs eating?

Re: How Many Oz?

  • At our 2 month checkup the pediatrician said 4 to 6 oz every 3 hrs is fine. We up'ed our LO from 4 oz to 5oz because he seemed Hungrystill.

  • Yesterday was the first day S went to daycare so it was really the first day we've seen how much she eats. She went through 3 4oz bottles within 6 hours and I was seriously amazed. She usually ate an extra ounce or two from the bottle or from the SNS and we just figured it was because she wasn't getting that much from me so she was making up for it. I'm thinking now she just wants to eat more than I thought!

  • We EP and our 2 month old eats about 25 to 27 oz a day. I store milk in 3.5 and 4 oz bottles and we just use whichever size is next in line. Sometimes she finishes them, sometimes there is a little left, but not so much that it's worth it to change the amount in the bottle. She averages 8 bottles a day.

  • DS is 13 weeks; he takes 6 ounces in a bottle and has 5-6 bottles a day (typically every 3-4 hours or so)

  • The "1 oz per hour" is good for estimating how much milk or formula he should have in a 24 hour period (approximately 25 oz). But the baby may eat more at one feeding (e.g. during the day) and less during night feedings, or go more than 3-4 hours between feedings at night, making up for it during the day.

Another factor is if you're feeding breast milk, the fat /calorie content changes throughout the day, so they may eat more of milk pumped from the morning and less of milk pumped later in the day.

I asked a similar question on the BFing board because I have a baby scale on loan from my LC and was wondering how to interpret the weighed feeding results from an isolated afternoon BF session. I was basically told that I would have to weigh all feedings from a 24 hour period to determine how much my girls ate at different times during the day. We weighed their wet diapers over a 24 hour period instead to get a conservative estimate and they were each taking in about 22 oz /day. My girls are on the smallish side for weight though (tall and skinny like daddy). I hope that makes sense.

I would ask your Pedi the recommended amount for his weight group. A was 11lbs 12 oz at her 2 month appointment and I was giving her 4 oz 6 times a day ( she sleeps through the night now) and my pedi told me to up it to 4 and half oz since she isnt waking up at night to feed. The recommended dosage for A's weight group is around 27/28 oz. ( I formula feed).
