Anyone dealing with possible asthma?

My 13 month old keeps getting bronchitis. Although they don't want to diagnose him with it since he is so young, but they are saying it probably caused by asthma. He already has several foods he's allergic to, general allergies, and exema. It's so hard to see them suffer! He just had his first breathing treatment Friday and was so pitiful :( Anyone else dealing with asthma? I have to start using an inhaler with him (the one with a chamber), any suggestions on how to do it without getting DS so irritated?? I have to force him now...hold his hands and he fights really bad which I don't blame him!

    Oh! And anyway to save on the many prescriptions??? We have BCBS, but it's still procey

    Doc thought our DD had asthma, also not diagnosed yet since she's only 14 months.  She has always been sick and it always goes into lungs and caused wheezing.  We were nebulizing every day.  She was finally tested for allergies at 12 months and we discovered she was allergic to dogs.  We believe she has allergy induced ashma.  We just found all of this out and moved our dogs to my parents' house for a trial.  It's been a month but DD is no longer sneezing or wheezing(unless around dogs) so we were able to stop the nebulizer treatments. I don't know about the inhaler because we didn't have to go that route yet.

    Is he wheezing 24-7?  Have you tried the nebulizer?

    No he's not wheezing all the time...he just keeps getting bronchitis and takes him a while to recover. He's had one breathing treatment but that was at the doctors office. Now he just has inhalers taken 3-5 times daily.

    Our 13 month old had RSV/bronchiolitis in November.  She's had recurring wheezing since then.  Any time she gets a runny nose it turns into wheezing.  Finally after this happening every two weeks I finally got a doctor to admit this wasn't normal.  We were doing albuterol a lot.  Now she's on pulmicourt twice daily as a preventative.  We haven't had any issues since we started it.  It's a nebulizer treatment so it's kind of a pain to do twice a day, but....

     

    They didn't officially diagnose it as asthma because they're hopeful she'll outgrow it.

    Our lo had bronchulitus in February, and pneumonia in November. Both caused by allergies. Our lo has environmental allergies that we know of so far, and has been diagnosed with asthma as well. This is no surprise to me because I have them too. Like previous posters we are now on preventil  (preventative inhaler twice a day) as well as children's zyrtec every day. I'm also on the adult equivalent type of regimen, so it makes sense. Let me know if you have any questions, I would be happy to help!

    My DD had similar issues (repeated bronchitis and bronchiolitis) and got diagnosed with asthma a little past 18 months old.  We took her to a pediatric asthma/allergy specialist and they got her on a regimen with a daily preventive inhaler and a rescue inhaler for when she was sick or having trouble breathing.  Over time we were able to gradually decrease the inhalers as the asthma got under better control and she rarely needs them at all now.  Don't be afraid to use the inhalers - they may not be around forever and they do make a huge difference.  DD also fought using them hard at first but she got used to it and it was no big deal after a while.  Good luck!

    DS has used an albuterol inhaler since about 20 months.  We were able to get him comfortable using the inhaler with aerochamber by showing him with a stuffed animal (that was about DS-size) first.  Let your child play with the chamber/mask (not the inhaler itself), pretend to use it yourself, make it seem familiar, play favorite music or videos during doses, lots of hugs, excitement "Oh, it's time for your medicine!  Let's go get it together."  Treat, kisses, etc. afterward.  Anything to make it a positive association instead of negative.   

    We found out this spring that DS has pretty bad seasonal allergies.  He is on Singulair, Flonase, and Allegra.  I guess that was a big trigger for his wheezing, because we have not used his inhaler all summer.
    DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.

    Wow I could have wrote your post to a T. Our son has had chronic eczema since 2 months that is controlled now. Seasonal allergies, allergic reactions to causes unknown and get hit really hard by any respiratory illness so much so that we typically get admitted to the childrens hospital for 2-3 days. Our family doctor said he most likely has asthma and prescribed an inhaler but the pediatrican at the childrens hospital said to not use it anymore until we see a specialist which were on the waiting list for. The Ped. Allergist Immunologist will diagnose asthma and prescribe a treatment plan and diagnose any other allergies. The asthma sucks but its workable. What scares me is the allergic reactions ... I worry we won't make it to the hospital one time. He gets hives all over his body and his eyes and lips swell right up. Once we know the causes things will be easier for him and us. It does suck to watch him suffer. No tips on savings on costs as I am in Canada so I don't know how your system works.
