Another teething question

Have any of you noticed your little ones going through cycles of being fussy and then being normal before teeth come in? My son has been super fussy for the past week and a half and my husband and I were convinced he was teething based on some of the other symptoms he had. However, the past 2 days he has been just so happy and smiling all day which is a complete 180 from how he has been. Now I'm wondering if there was something else bugging him or if its normal for the pain to come and go like that.

My other mommy friends have told me it's normal for the pain to come and go. Also, that these periods will last for a long time, until all the teeth come in :|

Yes! My LO has days where he gets frustrated super easy and cries if he drops his teething toy or whatever he is chewing on. This is not typical of his happy-go-lucky personality. I think it's normal for teething, Like Kleigh said, it lasts until all their teeth come in - if the fussiness stayed the whole time it would be like one looooong wonder week!

Rhys seems to be fussier than usual for a few days, then totally fine for a week, and then as if from nowhere, a tooth appears.  It's like once the tooth actually starts to break the surface he's fine.  I swear to you, twice now, I looked in his mouth to brush his gums and went, "Oh!  You have another tooth!"

I will also tell you what my FIL (he's a dentist) told me: teeth grow in kind of incrementally.  They will grow up, pushing against the gums for a few days, then they will kind of recede and the pressure is relieved for a few days.  Then up, up, then down.  It's kind of like, if you are trying to back your car out over a snow drift.  You make some progress against the snow, but then you take your foot off the gas pedal and, instead of staying where you were, you kind of slide back to where you started.  But then you hit the gas again and you back up, a little bit further into the snow than the time before, and so on.  This is why teething takes for-freaking-ever, and why they seem to be in pain for 2-3 days, then have a few days of being fine, then back to misery.

Thanks so much for posting this, it makes so much more sense now! DS1 seemed to be miserable most of the time with his teething, but DS2 definitely has the coming and going misery. So great to know there is something behind that and I'm not just crazy!

Thanks so much for that explanation DC! That makes me feel better about his change in mood and now I know what to expect! And no, I'd never be able to help a tooth pop through!
