"Speech Delay" in my 2-yr old. Need some encouragement....

Hi moms,

So our 26 month old has a delay in his speech. We've begun working with a speech pathologist with him...I just wonder if this is going to make learning difficult in the future. I guess what I want to know is if my kid will be caught up by kindergarten.

Has anyone else dealt with a speech delay? How is it working out?

Thanks for any tips/stories/advice, I really appreciate it. :)

PS- I know my siggy is way off. I forgot how to update it. Haha!

  • I'm 50/50 with delayed speech. My oldest completely caught up after a year of speech, my youngest is still pretty delayed although she's made progress on her own curve.

  • My daughter was 2.5 years old when we did speech therapy.  She didn't have many words and I didn't want her to be behind.  She did therapy for 6 months (she turned 3 and didn't qualify anymore).  She did get evaluated by the school district but she was already doing the things they said they were going to work on.  We chose not to continue after that and she has had a word explosion in the last few months. She doesn't stop talking now. I think she just lacked the confidence to talk and now she is a chatter box.  Keep up the work, it will pay off in the end!
  • My DD1 will be starting speech therapy at the end of next month, so I can't give any success stories but when she was evaluated she passed everything except expressive language. She understands everything, just can't vocalize it yet. Just keep working at it. And whenever you're feeling really discouraged, remind yourself that Einstein didn't talk until he was 4.

  • Thanks, ladies! Yes, he understands everything perfectly. He just doesn't seem like he cares to talk yet. :)

  • I have a success story! My son started speech therapy when he was 15 months old.  He wasn't a vocal baby with very little babbling.  But mostly I kept an extremely close eye on his language because he was put under for surgery twice under the age of one, from what I've read this can be the cause of speech and language delays.  He qualified for services in the area of expressive language as well and we began working with our pathologist twice a week right away.  I have to tell you, I'm a teacher, and I found the therapy fascinating.  I took everything the pathologist told me to the bank and literally changed the way I talked and played with my son so that we were constantly focusing on his development.  He progressed extremely quickly and by the year testing mark he tested out of services, at 2 and a half he was speaking at an over three year old level.  That being said I am so accustom to constantly encouraging good habits in his speech we really still live it.  We get compliments now on how well he speaks and how he is confident in expressing himself.  I loved our pathologist and she and I both cried when she left after our last visit.  It was a very rewarding experience all around.  Good luck!

My son wasn't diagnosed with a  speech delay but he did stop using most of the words he was saying from around one until about 2 months ago. It was amazing how many moms I met whos kids did the same thing and my pedi said as long as he can say one word at 2 and doesn't have any hearing issues he is fine, but that they'd reevaluate around 2. That's about when he started talking again (said mommy for the first time on his birthday!). He said 5 new words yesterday and is currently gleefully shrieking his new words around the house right now. :) I think personality plays a huge factor. He doesn' like to try new things and he is a complete perfectionist about getting things right. But now when he talks anyone can understand him (no toddler mumbling here) and he even used a sentence yesterday. So... I don't know if this helps you but I think I'm deciding to agree with people when they say kids learn at different times/speeds. :)

  • It all depends on what type of speech delay your son has.  Mine has a receptive as well as a expressive delay.  Our speech path has been WONDERFUL and we have seen a lot of progress in the last 9 months.  I wrote the post that says "Language 2.5-3 year old boys"

The special needs board on the bump has a lot of moms with kids that have language/speech delays who are very willing to share stories and .  My son's delay is getting better  but we have no idea how long it will take to catch up or if he will always have trouble.  Problem is-- he is very smart, he is just unable to articulate what he is thinking or understand a lot of what people say to him.  I can not have a "conversation" with him really even though he is three.

Although every day is a step towards more normal speech.  You can read my other posts to see my description of him.  Long story short-- a good speech therapist is worth their weight in gold and can have a lifelong impact on your child's development.  It won't hurt.
