screaming alarm clock

my lo is thirteen months and has been waking up screaming (not crying) for so long that I can't even remember when it started. he wakes up screaming after naps and when he starts his day in the morning. when i go into his room, he jumps up, smiles, and points to the door excited to get out and play. he is an early riser and his naps are usually no more than an hour or so long... and i am not sure if lack of sleep contributes to the screaming or if this is just a learned behavior since i always respond to his screaming. just wondering if this a phase, if anyone else's LO does this, and if there is a strategy to stop the behavior. i thought waking up to an actual alarm clock was bad... nope. a screaming baby is definitely worse. :)

Re: screaming alarm clock

  • My son used to scream to get out of his crib about the same age. What I did was I tried to wake up a little before he normally did and gently wake him and play with him while he was in his crib for a little bit before picking him up. It seemed to help. After about a week he stopped screaming when he woke up.

  • My son does the same thing. But it's only when he is in his crib I have to deal with it in the middle of the night sometimes when he wakes up for a bottle. But the funny thing is if he wakes up next to me, and DH he is perfectly happy till he is ready to get up, and play then he starts fussing.

  • My DS wakes up crying in the morning and after naps. I guess it's how I know to go get him. He also cries when I lay him down to GO to bed so there's just lots of crying around here. He's a very high maintenance kiddo though and super stubborn and strong willed. We are used to quite a bit of crying from him. I hear about my friends' babies who wake up talking and say it's so cute...yeah, no idea what that is like.

  • No advice.  DS wakes up screaming about 70% of the time. If I don't go get him, the screams get louder.  If it's before 6 a.m. in the morning, I bring him into bed with me.  He doesn't fall back asleep, but he'll quietly nestle against me and twirl my hair.  I rather enjoy it.  For naps, I just go get him and he is generally very happy once I pick him up.  I have no idea why he screams - he'd do the same thing when he naps in bed with me - he'd be perfectly asleep and the next second he'd suddenly wake up and start screaming.  Once I take him out of bed he is fine.
