Will that much change over the next couple of months?

I went to DS's soon-to-be daycare today to drop off the paperwork and I went to peek in the infant room and say hi to the teacher. She had 4 other infants in the room who she said were all about 4-5 months old. And the babies were all so... mellow. Each one was just sitting either in a bouncy seat or a swing awake, just kind of staring into space content while the teacher fed one. One was even lying in a crib totally awake, just laying there without a fuss. All I could think is how DS is so not that easy going. I mean, he has his perfectly happy baby moments when we're interacting, but he can't just sit somewhere for an extended period of time an just be. He's 2 months old so is this one of the big differences between 2 months and 4-5 months? Or do your 2 month olds sit around unoccupied and mellow like this and mine is just hyper and noisy and needy?

  • I was wondering the same thing. I have to constantly entertain my LO.

  • My LO is 2 months today, and she is about 50/50. She has been sleeping a lot, so that's great, but when she's awake and not hungry she will entertain herself for about 5-10 minutes pretty much anywhere (crib, play mat, bouncer chair, swing), but after that, she wants someone to talk to her and make faces at her, or she will fall asleep (if she's in the swing). Sometimes I think she sleeps too much (she'll almost always fall asleep if you put her in her swing).

I thought my LO sleeps too much, too - especially when I got the report from daycare. But I started tracking it, and he sleeps about the same amount whether he's home or there... about 13 hours in a 24 hour period... which I guess is normal.

Oh - and to the OP - my LO is 3 months, and he's pretty quiet and content. Part of it is just his demeanor, I think, but I do think he's gotten even more independently mellow over the last several weeks.

  • My niece works in daycare, and she said they rotate the babies every 30 minutes so they are never in the same thing for that long (bouncy seat, then swing, then feed, etc.) I think this keeps them interested and content. My LO is pretty content during the day....but it's the after 5pm time that she's super fussy. If I rotated her that much during the day, I think she'd be mostly happy. She's 3 months now.

  • My 2 month old is mellow...she sleeps a lot and is content just hanging out in a swing or bouncy. She has periods of alert and awake time and when she's alert I play with her and do tummy time, etc.  I think it's probably unusual to have that many clam/content babies but maybe they had just been fed so that's why they were all happy :)

  • Mine loves to be interacted with. He loves to be talked to. I am freaking out about daycare and thought that someone isnt going to be constantly talking and playing with him like I do. :(   He will however sit under his mobile by himself for quite awhile and entertain himself.

Thanks. It's ok if they're on the same page - I do a lot of "the itsy bitsy spider" and talking to them in a loud Cookie Monster voice with a maniacal grin on my face. But it sucks when one wants to be rocked or nursed to sleep and the other is demanding Cookie Monster voice.

LOL. This needs to be the quote of the day, " talking to them in a loud Cookie Monster voice with a maniacal grin on my face."

I absolutely love your siggy pic @wmorgan003 :D Super cute! (Sorry that has nothing to do with this conversation)

  • Simon is pretty chill and just hangs out at DC. My daughter I suspect would not have been as easy at the same age.

  • So much will change over the next few months but that doesn't mean all babies end up quiet and content to sit or lie alone and stare. Some babies will always be higher maintenence.
  • She will sit content for about 10 mins then she gets bored/irritable and wants to be played with. The longest she will lie down is 20 mins and that's only on the changing table. For some reason she loves that!

  • My LO would not sit for more then 20 minutes with out interaction before I went back to work and hated to sit in her swing. She has now been at day care for 2 weeks and loves her swing and sit for 30 minutes or so at home. I think as they get older they can sit and entertain them selves for longer. Just hang in there. it gets easier!
