Ferber question

Question about sleep training.. I know if baby crys let him cry for specified intervals.. So after 5 mins of crying you go in and try and comfort baby without picking him up.. Do I comfort for a couple mins then leave even if he's still crying? Also.. Is it acceptable to use a paci? Or is that a no no? My baby doesn't seem to be comforted unless I pick him up or give him his paci.. Any tips?

    Do whatever works. if he needs a soother, give it to him

    I'm in the same positions - K needs a pacifier to sleep so when he cries of course it falls out. When I go in to check on him, I'll replace it but it'll quickly fall out. Eventually he'll fall asleep without it, but I don't know if it's confusing to him since I'm not ready to sleep train yet for naps, so he has it for naps. hmmm. don't have an answer...I'm confused too.

    i have both books! I don't think Weissbluth's book has anything about paci's in it - I should revisit Ferber's though.

    Healthy sleep habits happy child by weissbluth is my sleep bible. He talks a little about pacis being ok for a while but I didn't pay too much attention because my kids hated them and prefer their thumbs. I would highly recommend reading the book as thoroughly as you can. Good luck!

    We had some trouble in the beginning and did Ferber sleep training around 6 weeks old to get LO to sleep in crib at night. We did cry then walk in and talk/pat LO. I didn't do paci bc he would spit it out . Ferber i believe says not to pick baby up so we didnt. It only took one night of the crying and he has slept in crib no problem since then. He is now 23 weeks

    I was under the impression that you're not suppose to stay that long in the room during checks. Basically go in, don't pick them up, but let them know you're there to reassure them (quick tummy/back rub) and then leave again. You're not suppose to be the one soothing them to sleep with prolonged rubbing. They're suppose to be learning to do that themselves.

    But I agree- definitely read the books. Ferber goes through everything step by Step and night by night so it's really easy to understand.
