Ounces during day working moms

Went back to work full-time last week on the 22nd and my MIL is watching LO. For all you working moms, how many ounces does your little one take during the day? I feed her at 7am before we drop her off. MIL feeds her 3 oz at 10am and 3 oz at 2:30pm. I feed her at 5pm, 7pm, 9pm and multiple times thoughout the MOTN. LO is 13 weeks and is having wet and dirty diapers but DH and I are concerned that MIL is not feeding her enough. I pump twice while at work and produce 12 oz total (6 oz per time). I feel like I'm making up for her lost oz. during the day in the MOTN. MIL says when she fusses she gives her the pacifier and she falls back to sleep. We are just concerned that she is actually hungry and she is avoiding feeding her. Only 6oz. during the day just doesn't seem like enough.

Re: Ounces during day working moms

  • I am not back to work yet, but plan to leave 4 3.5 oz bottles for our nanny between 7:30 am and 5:30 pm. I would expect her to feed him 3 of them with the 4th as a reserve. I would agree that you LO might benefit from one more bottle during the day. However, some babies just won't take bottles during the day so they can fill up directly from the tap with mom. It seems the 10-2:30 stretch is a little long.

  • Warner is taking 8-9 ounces on a good day lately, nursing a lot when I'm home and MOTN. I agree though that 10-2:30 stretch seems like a good time to sneak in another few ounces!

  • DD takes at least 12 oz a day. I bring more than that and dcp also keeps some frozen bags if needed unexpectedly

I make four 4oz bottles. DD usually eats every 2.5 to 3 hours - sometimes though she'll only drink 2oz at a feeding and will finish up the rest in another couple of hours. Last week, there was always a bottle left over so she was eating about 12oz between 7 and 5. Today though she finished up all four bottles by 3, so her daycare provider asked me to bring 5 bottles tomorrow just in case. I'll probably make a little 2oz bottle and see how she does on that before increasing the number of bottles. I don't want to overfeed her either.

  • My daughter is just about 4 months old. She nurses at 6:30 AM. She gets 5 ounce bottles around 9:30, 12:30 and 3:30 (she eats between 4 and 5 ounces). Then I nurse her around 5:30 and before bed (between 6:30 and 7:30). She wakes up once or twice during the night (usually only once). I pump three times a day and get between 4 and 6 ounces per afternoon pump and between 7 and 10 ounces first thing in the morning.

What your MIL is feeding doesn't sound like nearly enough to me. It could be that your baby is reverse cycling. Or perhaps your mil isn't offering enough.
  • DS takes 9 ounces on a bad day and about 12 on a good day and he's 4 months old.  I nurse him at 7:30a before I drop him off at my MIL's house & also when I return to him around 5:30p.  He nurses sooooo much when we're finlly home together like Skiddero.

DD started out taking only 8 oz - 4 oz every four hours. But she also slept more. Now she takes about 13 oz, which is almost exactly what I pump. (2-4.5 oz and 1 -4 oz). She's 3 months. DS took 15 oz per day usually. We knew he was ready for solids when he drank 30 oz one day!! Pedi said an oz per hour is fairly avg, so 8 isn't bad since you feed her right before you leave. But you can always play around around with smaller, more frequent bottles and then up amounts until you find the right mix.

I agree with this. If you are apart for 7-8 hours, MIL should at least be offering three bottles. However, when I went back to work before summer DS still hated the bottle. He only drank. 6-7 os while we were apart and nursed like crazy all evening. It sounds like she's not even offering it though. I would ask her to offer a bottle every 3 hours or so. It may take a little time for everyone to adjust to the new arrangement, but you will!

  • Sounds like your LO eats during the day what my DS eats during the night. You have lots of MOTN feedings to make up for it. If your MIL starts offering more milk, your LO will probably drop some of those MOTN feedings.
  • I send 15 oz which he usually gets through, there have been a couple of days where the piglet forced them into the freezer stash!

  • I nurse before we leave home in the am and then I take 3-3 ounce bottles. Then he averages every 2 hours once we are home during the evening. Some nights he sleeps thru the night and others he will wake around 4-5, nurse and go back to sleep until 7-7:30. I'm in awe of those of you that are able to pump 7 ounces in one session!

I'll be going back to work soon. I plan on sending 4 4-5oz bottles with LO. He will be in daycare 730am to 4pm. Most likely he will only need 3 bottles but some days he cluster feeds a bit in the mornings. Ive started to give him formula bc my supply is dropping. I usually gove him 1-2 formula bottles a day. With BM he eats every 2-3 hours but with formula he will go 3-4 hours between feedings. He eats 26-30oz in a 24 hour period. He is 14 weeks old. I'll be giving a tub of formula to his daycare provider to use when I don't have enough BM to give them, but I plan on trying to give hi. As much BM as possible. I pump the most in the AM. I pump 5-6 am and get about 8-10oz total then another 8 oz around 10-11am. The rest of the day, I ca only pump about 5 oz total.

  • DD is 14 weeks and takes 12oz. I am upping that to 15 tomorrow. One bottle at 9:30, 12:30 and 3:30.

I feed her at 6:30a, around 6, 7:15 and 9pm. She usually STTN. I would say another feeding would be needed in there but maybe not. Try it and see.

This is about us. I get home at 6 and he usually eats about then and maybe at 7:30 and then at like 9:30.  Then he'll sleep till 2 or 3 and eat then, then again at 4 or 5.

I'm gone from 7:30 to 6 and he eats 3 times in between then, whenever he's hungry.  And usually between 3 and 4.5 ounces each time.  When I pump I produce more than he's eating, which is par for us.  My MIL just writes down what he eats and if it's less during the day I find he's hungrier in the evening.

This is exactly me, except my LO is a little all over the map with what time she wakes up for an MOTN feeding.

I've worried that 9 ounces is not enough during the day - but she doesn't seem to be hungry so I'm going with it for now.  Plus she is still getting used to the bottle so for now I don't want to waste milk.

I'm also envious of those that get such good pumping results.I get 5 ounces at the most and am coming to the realization that I am probably going to have to start supplementing within the next week or so. At this point though I kind of feel like that's not the end of the world - since I find pumping at work to be super cumbersome and time consuming.
