2nd Trimester

Lemme get this straight

So we're not allowed to sleep on our backs bc it's bad for us or the baby or both?
I understand that the weight of the uterus is pressing on a vein/artery/I forget but is it for us or would the baby be effected?

Re: Lemme get this straight

  • It cuts off the major aortic vein in your stomach, so after 20 weeks its a no no

  • Actually, you can sleep on your back. If a problem arises your body will instinctively move.
^this. It's not an issue of allowed/not allowed - there are no sleeping police. Some women can lie comfortably on their backs their entire pregnancy, others cannot. I was able to lie on my back well into 3rd tri with my twins.

  • With both of my pregnancies I haven't been able to stand being on my back or even reclined even short periods of time.  As a matter of fact late in my first pregnancy my midwife had to put me on my side for my exams because I nearly passed out on my back.  My point is your body will let you know if you're causing yourself harm on your back.  It is best to sleep on your side though.
  • I wake up propped up on my back all the time. As of right now, it's more comfortable than my side
  • Sleep however the hell you want.  Like others have said, you'll move naturally when it becomes uncomfortable.

  • Sleep however is comfortable.  I'm still a stomach sleeper and I catch myself on my back when I wake up.

  • My OB's office told me to stop lying on my back at 20 weeks+.  What confuses me is that when I get my ultrasounds I lie on my back.  How is it okay for me to be on my back at the Dr's office, but not at home?

Well probably because at the Dr Office you are only on your back for a brief time.   Though as PP have mentioned, you will wake up if you need to move, your body wont let you sleep through circulation issues.  You'de get that numb feeling in your leg etc..
  • I guess I"ll be on the other side for this one. I lay on my back periodically, but not for prolonged periods. The was I understand it is that laying on your back can slow blood flow back to your heart and thus can reduce oxygen and nutrients getting to baby. Certainly not a problem for 10 minutes, but 6 hours?

I hear what people are saying about you'll move if there's a problem, but I think that only applies to your body, not baby's.

But again this is a recommendation for "optimal" care for your fetus. I'm pretty sure if you could do any severe damage they would be much harsher on the warnings.

I just sleep on my side and then don't have to think about it.

  • I try to sleep on my left side.

There have been some studies that show sleeping on your left decreases the risk of stillbirths. The risk is low, but I'll suffer through sleeping on my left if I can decrease it at all.
