What would you do? Need advice

So DS has had a runny nose that started sunday he's progressively gotten a little worse every day and now it's turned into him coughing at night. I think he's also teething and have put vicks on his chest at night and ibuprofen a couple times a day. He's been waking up a lot at night and whimpers but eventually falls back to sleep on his own. I just don't know if it's a cold, allergies or from teething and also don't know if I should take him to the doc. Any advice? Thanks ladies :)

  • I forgot to add that's he's super grumpy and acts tired all day, probably because he's not getting good sleep :(

That's tough. DS only has had a cough once and I did take him to the doc. You could always call a nurse and see what they suggest. I wouldn't feel bad taking him in with those symptoms.
  • It sounds like a cold or allergies which I don't think the doctor can do anything for anyway. I have always taken LO to the doctor if he has a fever, or if I somehow suspect he has an ear infection but otherwise it's just cuddle time. Poor baby! :-<

Sounds like a virus. I don't think you need to take him in unless you really want peace of mind. C has been pretty much the same way for the last while. I had him checked out because I already had an appt plus I knew he had pink eye, but otherwise just a virus. He finally STTN the last two nights after about 2 weeks of not STTN! I would keep doing what you're doing.
That's weird that they get sick during the summer, I thought it might be allergies since DH and I both have them. I think it's gone from his nose to his chest now, I wish we could give them medicine for this age, in the meantime lots of cuddling and no sleeping for both of us :( I want to go in and sit with him when he's rolling around whimpering at night but know that when I leave the room he'll cry and make it worse, it's tough!

  • I'd call the nurses line.  When we had normal insurance and it was a $20 co-pay to take them in, I'd take them in all the time just for peace of mind.  Unfortunately now we have a different insurance and we have to pay for each visit, so I definitely use the nurses line more often!

Hope he's feeling better soon.  Sick little ones are NO fun!

  • Ditto PP who said to call the nurses line, if only for a little peace of mind. It sounds like you're doing all of the right things. Have you tried a humidifier at all? I know it sounds weird, being summer and all, but the extra moisture might help.

I hope LO feels better soon!

  • I called and talked to the nurse and she thinks it's probably a viral thing. I guess they make a johnson and johnson bubble bath that has vapor like vick's so going to try that out. Hopefully he gets better it's hard on him and me since I'm home with a grumpy sick baby all day :(

When DD had a bad cold, her pedi said I could give her a 1/2 tsp. of the puple Triaminic at night and the red kind during the day.  It has a decongestant and an antihistamine (sorry if I butchered that spelling), and also a cough syrup.  It definitely helps clear things up, and I think it helps her be more comfortable at night.

Target used to make a version of this and I love it!  I can't find it anymore so not sure if they still make it but it was 1/2 the price of the J&J stuff.  We use it in the shower anytime any of us are feeling bad.  Helps to get the congestion moving!

How is he feeling?  Any better?

Thanks Kelly! Yea I found both the Target and J&J brand at Target here, I went ahead and got the J&J brand but good to know their brand is just as good! It wasn't really with the shampoos which was weird it was by the desitin so maybe you'll find it. I think it helped but who knows, he's still grumpy but no fever so I think it's a mix of teething/cold. I was glad to have the weekend and DH around because I needed a break from the grumpiness!

I wish they'd bring orange Triaminic back!!!  That stuff was THE BEST!  But also it still bugs me that they don't let you use cold/cough medicines with kids anymore.  If the kid can't get any sleep, how on earth are they going to recover..  I'd rather have a little bit of cough medicine to help them rest and recover in the early phase than antibiotics constantly to try to clear things up in the long haul.
