Giving birth w/ herpes. Tmi

edited July 2013 in Natural Birth
I have had genial herpes for about four years now and I've done alot of reading about giving birth and the potential risks of the baby catching the virus during labor. I was just wondering if anyone out there has been through this already and managed to avoid a c section. I would really love to deliver vaginally but fear that an outbreak would mean c section. Im hoping to be able to manage an all natural birth in a hospital w a midwife. Im only 10 weeks in so hsvent figured out details yet but this is a reoccuring fear. Apparently 1 in 4 people have herpes II so.... Anyone out there want to share?

  • If you've already had it for 4 years the risk to your baby during a vaginally birth is about zero. You've already passed on your antibodies to the baby. Only women that contract it during the third trimester would have to have a c section to prevent transmission to the baby. Your obgyn should prescribe an antiviral in your last few weeks of pregnancy just as a precaution to keep any outbreaks at bay. You have nothing to worry about and are better off knowing that you have it for sure so you can take precautions with the antivirals.

  • Anyone that has a hx of herpes should be put on Valtrex around 36wks just as a precaution.  If you don't have a current outbreak, no contraindication for a vaginal birth.

    Good luck!
