High-Risk Pregnancy

Hi...just diagnosed with GD and need some help!!!

I have just been diagnosed with GD and I need a few easy meal plans to get me through until I get to the doc. I will need to be medicated with insulin so I am scared because this is so new to me and I want to eat healhy for the baby and I. I have been testing my sugars and they are ok not where my OBGYN wants them to be, but they aren't that high. So far I have been eating eggs for breakfast and need suggestions for easy lunches and dinner. I appreciate the help!!!

  • You still need to eat carbs - no carb is just as bad as your body will overcompensate by releasing more glucose (which will give you higher numbers).

  • Why are you so sure you will end up on insulin? If your levels are ok, but not perfect, it may be that you can easily control your GD with diet. I did end up on insulin but only after not being able to gain control with diet, the highest dose of Metformin and even with lower levels of insulin. It took a lot of trial and testing to finally get things under control for me, but that's not the case for everyone.

  • My OBGYN says that she thinks I was a diabetic before I got pregnant and it was never controlled. I am working on controlling my diet so I am hoping once I see the diabetic doctor he will not put me on insulin. I do eat carbs just not as much. I used to eat a lot of carbs before this so I am trying to eat healthier options that are more balanced.
  • I have found that chicken helps my numbers a lot. I can eat the breaded chicken nuggets but not fries if we go to Wendy's. If I'm home I would have wheat bread with peanut butter, carrots with hummus and half an apple. Dinner as long as I eat a good amount of protein and veggies I can eat carbs without an issue. My number issues are always fasting/breakfast. I am so darn tired of eggs and bacon, etc. I found a recipe online for a Cake Batter protein shake. I bought some yesterday and mixed it with water. My numbers were around 99. I was hungry within the next two hours. There is a more involved shake recipe too with the protein powder, cottage cheese or greek yogurt and some other things. I haven't tried it yet but that would be better suited for a snack since I was told not to eat any dairy or fruit within two hours of waking up. If I eat steak or any red meat my numbers are in the 80's. I tried a bowl of cereal one day even for lunch and it was "healthy cereal" with low fat milk.....192!!!! That's the highest I've ever come close to. Dannon Light & Fit yogurts and greek yogurts are awesome! They do not have that aftertaste that most diet yogurts have. The greek one has a ton of protein! Good Luck!!!!!

  • I knew I was type 2/borderline diabetic before I got pregnant. I lost 85 lbs and my numbers were under control with no medication. However, at 6 week pregnant I started checking my numbers and my fasting number was high. I have been following a strict diet for about a year and 1/2. My doctor put me on a very low doesage of Glyburide every night before bed that seems to do the trick.

That being said, the high-risk specialist already warned me that my numbers will spike again around week 20 and additional medication/options may be needed. I felt really frustrated when I needed the medicine but the doctor assured me that pregnant women need lower numbers than the average person and that when the baby is born there is a good chance I can go back to just a controlled diet. I try to remind myself that I am doing what is best for the baby and there are tons of women before me who survived this same situation and had beautiful healthy babies!

Keep us updated and I hope you have a happy and healthy pregnancy!

  • I have my appt with the doc next week to look over my labs and see a dietician. So far I have been eating more balanced meals and I have noticed a few changes...more energy for once!!! Thanks ladies for your advice I greatly appreciate it!!!
  • The one good thing about following their GD diet is you do not gain a ton of weight. Well, I haven't at least. I started out heavier than I should have been so I knew I shouldn't be gaining a ton of weight to begin with. Baby is growing and is very healthy but I've only gained 4lbs at 22 weeks. So that is right on track according to my graph. I feel better about being able to lose the weight after the baby comes now.

  • I checked out a few cookbooks from the library for diabetics or low-carb meals. if you enjoy cooking, that's one way to keep yourself sane.   I found I could have pasta- the protein kind by Barilla- in moderation and usually had to go with pesto rather than red sauce.
