Activities for a 4yo Birthday Party

My DS's 4th Birthday is coming up in about 2 and a half months. I know it's kinda early to think about, but I go back to work in less than a month and I won't have as much time. It also gives me time to think about the money involved.
There will be less money. We are paying more rent in a new place (but it's beautiful and I can't wait to blow it up with streamers) and DS is starting school and tuition, though very affordable, will eat away at our fun money.
So while I'm over here, hoarding candy for my homemade piñata and setting up in my mind that the menu will be Little Caesars and store bought wings (BIG hit last year), I'm mulling over entertainment. Naturally, I think bouncy house. Last year, MIL paid for it, as she usually pays for something for her grandkids' parties as a gift but I don't want to depend on it; if she gets it, she gets it. There'll be about 15 kids ages 3-15 (I am counting my 15yo BIL who acts like he's 5 lol) and the theme is Angry Birds. I was thinking of building a cardboard tower with green balls made up like piggies for the kids to knock down and rebuild, just like the game. Bubbles, sidewalk chalk, crafts and maybe set up some fun stuff on our sunporch since it'll be fall.

Any other ideas for non-bouncy house activities?

  • Love the tower idea! Some stuff I've done for my kids bday parties were messy but fun. We've done an egg toss where with each throw the kids take a step apart. Also a lemon juice race where you cut lemons into wedges and use small clear cups with a line marked in the same spot on each. Pair the kids up, one has to carry the lemon wedge in their mouth with out using their hands to pick it up and bring it across to their partner and the partner squeezes the juice into the cup. Whoever gets to the line 1st wins a little prize. Scavenger hunts are fun too. Leave clues that lead to a prize. You mentioned it being around fall so perhaps painting little pumpkins.

We had 10 or 11 kids over for DS's fifth bday and we just had our playroom open. The kids had a blast, there was no extra stuff necessary. After food and cake, they took turns playing the Wii so that was the only "activity," although it wasn't anything planned/special.

If the weather is nice, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, and a beach ball are sufficient...maybe one of those bean bag toss sets.

  • I have a lot of craft tutorials on my blog that are good for little ones and I often add 'for bigger kids' tips at the end of them. Feel free to stop by and check them out. https://artmamasays.blogspot.com/
