Weaning and MSPI

I plan to begin weaning DD at 1 year, assuming no issues come up between now and then.  I am curious though, what do you give a child that cannot have WCM?  We have nut allergies in the family, so almond milk probably isn't going to be our first option.  Coconut milk?  We have our 9 month appointment next week, but our pediatrician is kind of useless in regards to nursing/MSPI issues, etc.   TIA!

Re: Weaning and MSPI

  • I wouldn't worry too much about it just yet. A lot is still changing in their tiny bodies before a year.

I started to ask the same questions before our 9 months appointment. The doctor said to just wait until the 1 year appt to worry about it. I of course asked on my BMB anyway and started doing a bunch of reading. DD stole some eggs of DHs plate that had cheese in them and had a very minor reaction. Si I waited a week for it to clear up and tried again, NO reaction. She grew out of her milk issues right at her 10 month birthday.

  • We are using almond milk.  Our pedi recommended almond or soy milk.  I was leaning more towards coconut milk but the pedi said calcium is really important and coconut milk has lower levels of calcium.  She said to avoid rice milk because it does not have the nutrients that LO needs. We just started almond milk this weekend.  LO did OK with it and seems to like it.   I agree with the PP that a lot will change by the time LO is one.  I re-introduced diary into my diet when LO was 10 months old and she tolerated it well.  We tried yogurt when LO was 11 months old and she had no issues. We are planning to try cheese soon.  Many times an intolerance is outgrown so hopefully your LO won't have issues with dairy in the future.
  • Thanks all.  DD has FPIES to dairy and soy, along with several other foods, and supposedly FPIES typically lasts until 3, though can definitely be outgrown sooner.  I am just nervous because tree nut allergies are in the family (DH's sister), and DD already can't have rice or soy.  Blah!
