We used the phone. I guess we could have Skyped. We live on a different continent as our families, and aren't likely to see them in person until after the baby is born. Mail is also difficult. So, yeah.
Get your family together and say you want to take a group picture but secretly have it on "record video". My DH had me in the picture and was holding the camera. First have them say "Cheese" and then while recording say "I'm going to take one more. Everyone get together and say Heather's Pregnant!'
My dad and sister said it without thinking but my mom's face was priceless. Her mouth dropped open and she just started crying. It took a couple more seconds until my sister and dad started say "Wait, are you really pregnant?". Then it turned into a mess of jumping and hugging. The video is adorable.

Definitely go to pinterest!!!!! We are telling our immediate family by buying "I'm going to be a big cousin" shirts as gifts for my niece and his nephew who have birthdays at the end of August. When they unwrap them, the whole family will know!
I haven't decided what my 'public' announcement will be yet, but I've pinned TONS of ideas so far It will be a picture of some sort that is posted on facebook....mainly because almost everyone we know is on there.

Would you kindly send us to your Pinterest board? I had a really cute idea when I was pregnant and miscarried because I would have been 13 weeks on valentines day and was going to incorporate that. My husband is deploying next weekend for 4 months so I was trying to figure out a cute way to incorporate us skyping into our fb reveal pics.
DH and I both wore Converse for our wedding so we found some baby shoes that look similar to converse and took pics of just our shoes standing next to the baby shoes. I'm going to print the picture and send it to my family with no other words besides love J&P on the back. We thought it would be fun to be a little mysterious and let them figure it out and get excited.
My husband and I are going home (we live in CO and family is in AR) for my nieces first birthday in late September. Both of our mothers birthdays are in October. We will not be going back home until Thanksgiving or Christmas. I am hoping to have a sonogram picture before we go to the party. I want to present them both with their 'birthday gifts' early--which we were thinking of wrapping a bib or something that said Grandma with a copy of the sonogram picture. Or something along those lines. We keep playing around with ideas, but have weeks to figure it out.
avigailandcharlie -- My board is actually hidden so that my friends don't see all the baby stuff I save lol. But if you go to pinterest and type in "pregnancy announcement" you'll find a lot of the ones I've already pinned
At 12 weeks, I am going to make some hand made cards which just say 'Well Done!' on the front and inside I am going to put a copy of the ultra sound photo and a message saying 'Congratulations, you're going to be Grandparents/Auntie/Uncle!'. We will arrange to get all the family together and give them each a card and I will get my fiancé to take photo's as they open them to catch the moment : )
I was looking around last night and saw something else I thought would be cute. We would tell my mother and MIL that we were working on their presents but they weren't done yet and hand them a framed picture of the sonogram.
I'm planning on taking a picture of my 3-year-old holding the first ultrasound picture and emailing it to everyone. (We have a lot of family who live in different states, so we do a lot of email.)
I've also thought about making my little boy a t-shirt that sayd "BIG BRO" and bringing him to a family event.
We got a fortune cookie from the Chinese takeout along with some eggrolls. We typed on a paper "you will soon be a grandfather" and used tweezers to pull out other fortune and put ours in. My FIL read it and it took him a second. But then it hit him and was awesome!

I am planning dinner with my best girlfriends (they are 3 hours away in my home town, so it needs to be planned ahead of time), and I'm now trying to think of ways to tell them in a cute way!
I heard of the fortune cookie thing, so I was thinking if I did that we could go to a Chinese restaurant or something and I could get the waitress to hand them out at the end...but I'm not sure?

Thanks ladies! I will definitely check out pinterest. I love the photos of the feet/shoes for my ILs who are local. Not sure yet for my parents who are not.
I know you said you did the shirt thing already, but what about one for an animal if you have one? This will be our fb post, and to send to family and friends, only one with us in it of course.
::: lurker here, coming out of the shadows for this post:: This is what we will do for our parents. We printed these pics and put them in a frame to give to them.
It's kinda hard to read them. The first one says "Picture Frame... $13.97", the second says "Chalkboard... $7.97" and the last one says "Realizing there are 3 people in this picture... PRICELESS!"
Hey hey! We made a video about "our upcoming anniversary" and sent it to our family and friends. Here's the link if you want to see it. It's only 20 seconds long.
We bought a frame that said "grandparents" on it and put a picture of us holding chalkboard signs that said "Grandkid #2 arriving March 2014". We used a "cousins" frame to tell our siblings (and nieces and nephews) with a picture of us with signs that said "cousin (last name) arriving March 2014".

Anyhow, my In-Law we had DD walk in their house and read her shirt (kinda easy.)
My parents we gave DD a book and asked her to give it to my mom to read. It took a minute but she got it and got sooo excited.
The book was called "Hello in there! A big sister's book of waiting"
