1st Trimester

Increasing calories

Looking to increase my calorie intake because I know I'm not eating enough. I feel horrible about it but eating more just seems impossible right now.

I thought maybe someone had a good protein shake they could recommend? Obviously no raw eggs and easy to find? Help!

Re: Increasing calories

  • I would look at Ensure or Carnation Instant Breakfast shakes.  These are meant to be meal replacements so they have vitamins and minerals, calcium, iron, etc.  Just be careful with the ones with artificial sweeteners -- some docs recommend against those during pregnancy (or at least warn to use them in moderation).   If you're lactose intolerant then maybe look for pre-mixed shakes with no dairy, or the powdered kind you can mix with soy or almond milk (again, careful with the soy if you're looking at more than one serving per day).

  • How do you know you aren't eating enough? Think high quality, high fiber protein. Beans, avocado, eggs, tofu. At this point eat what sounds good and stays down. Once you get over the first trimester hump then you can focus more on nutrition and less on just making it.

  • I know I'm not eating enough because I keep a food journal. I've always been that kind of person. I'm a business owner I keep records & journals of everything. It's crazy but it just helps me function. So my OB said "increase your calories by 300 a day" and if anything I've decreased my calories not by choice. The nausea is outrageous. One more month until the first trimester is over :( ugh
  • I make my own - half a banana, frozen berries, almond milk and protein powder.  I use a vegetarian friendly one its called Soy-Free Veg and is made by Naturade, but you could use any powder.

What kind of blender do you use? I have been researching them all morning! I wanna make my own baby food too! So I want to get something bad ass! Ha!
  • I looked at the vitamix! It seems ideal. What size did you guess?
