50 Shades of Grey...birthday?!?

Ok, my original theme for my son's 1st birthday was Curious George. Saturday we received an invite to our cousin's son's 3rd birthday. Curious George. So, scratch that idea.

My son's name is Grayson. My friend (who's pretty crafty and an amazing party planner) thinks we can turn Mommy porn into a 1st birthday theme. Any thoughts. 50 Shades of Gray(son)? paint swatch invitations? base the party around different shades of the color Gray? maybe have a picture collage of 50 pictures of Grayson throughout his first year doing different things/different moods.

My husband isn't sold on the idea. I think I'm into it! It's unique, but I'm afraid people may get the wrong idea.

  • see, that's the thing getting me.  I don't want people to take it literally.  Obviously it's not based on the book....we're not going to handcuff people as they walk in or whip them throughout the party.  We're basically just using the name of the book.  The theme would be his different little moods/personalities and different shades of the color gray.

    I'm torn.

it doesn't matter if you just use the name. People will immediately associate the book and the party whether or not you actually do anything. Just associating that book with a baby makes me really uncomfortable. And I am REALLY liberal.

you could do a cool grayscale invite and everything, I just wouldn't mention the title at all.

  • I never read the book so I'm not even really sure about the content.  I just know there's bondage in there.  makes sense.  I thought we could use the name as the theme but would be able to distinguish it enough away from the book.  Ok, need a new theme then.  :(

Do you have any other books you read regularly with LO? There's a lot of storybook themes you could run with. We did The Very Hungry Caterpillar for DS1's 1st birthday. It was a really fun theme to do. I did a caterpillar banner with a photo of him from each month and it came out really well. We did cupcakes too in the shape of the caterpillar. There's a ton of stuff on pinterest for it. We did a low key Elmo party for him for his 2nd birthday and Disney Cars this year. Doing Cat in the Hat for DS2 for his 1st birthday, which also has lots of fun ideas.

  • We have a TON of books....we just kind of alternate and I haven't found one that he likes anymore than the others.  Hmmm...back to the drawing board.

  • I wouldn't bring the name of those trashy books within 50 yards of my LO. Head to Pinterest. I guarantee you'll find something.

Yup. I would not use it. Even though I have not read the book, my mind immediately went naughty... And that's not something I would want associated with my child's 1st bday party.

  • haha, ok.  bad Idea.  I thought we could make it kidsy enough to get away from associating it with the book.  Not.  Doing.  It.

if the book wasn't so WILDLY popular. you might get away with it. but yea...everything with that title brings my mind straight to S&M territory.

the idea itself is cute. just not the title.
yea, or if the book didn't involve so much bondage and sexual dominace haha.  darn it!
