Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Shoes

DS has been walking for about 3-4 months now.  He's a good walker - and, now is running around.  In Stride Rite terms - he's "off and running."  Which brings me to my question. I just bought DS two new pairs of shoes at Stride Rite using a rewards coupon and doing their BOGO special.  I spent $40 on two pairs of shoes, which is a good deal in the Stride Rite world, but still is more than I'd like to spend on shoes that DS will grow out of in a few months. I do realize that's what shoes (and clothes) shopping is going to be like for years to come, but when it comes to shoes, did there come a point where you became less concerned about DS/DD having "good" shoes as they were developing as a walker?  Or, have you continued to stick with brands Stride Rite, Pediped, etc., and just plan to spend a decent amount on shoes?

Re: Shoes

  • By the time my kids were about 2 1/2 I didn't worry about making sure they had stride rite shoes. 1 st ones while their feet were developing and learning to walk, sure I wanted to make sure they had a great pair of shoes that wouldn't hinder their development. By the time they had been walking for over a year I wasn't as concerned that they had to be stride rite. If you can find a 2nd hand store that sells gently used children's clothes its a great way to get good foot wear at a great price. I find so many items that still have tags on them.

I have and will pretty much always care about the quality of my DDs shoes. I wont even buy her shoes that are more for decoration and if she gets them as a gift she wears them for pictures or to and from parties then off they go. I will eventually let her chose her shoes, but it will be when she is older. This is because
    A. Shoes are expensive and I won't be buying shoes for her to wear that will match only a few outfits. (Maybe once her feet stop growing she can get a shoe collection).
    B. Feet are important and we take them for granted.

Even if she does have a few shoes that arn't great for her feet down the road I won't be letting her wear them to the zoo or anywhere with lots of walking.

Edit: I forgot to say that we have been lucky and DD has fit into her first shoes almost twice as long as they said she would. We had her fitted again the other day and they said she could still fit in her shoes but we bought a pair one size up because I feel she needed more width at least.

We also keep two pairs of shoes max, again, unless given to us. One pair of tennis shoes all year and then during the summer we keep a good 'sandal' type shoe. It is a cover toe and is built more like a tennis shoe, it just has open sides and some mesh so it breathes more.

  • I bought a pair of Keens for when he is outside at daycare. They are awesome. I love how easy they are to put on and he is "walking" but also crawling and they don't hinder either. I feel like one pair for warm weather and one pair for cold for now.

  • I think we'll probably always stick with "good" shoes, but I also don't buy them full price.  I stock up during sales, so it's never really a cost issue.

  • Honestly, I care a lot about my feet and her feet.  We pay more for good shoes that fit our feet well and I will continue to do that for her.  It's one of those "luxury" things that I think is important for foot health and proper development of gait and ergonomics.

Of course, DD is just as happy to run around barefoot as much as she can, so that cuts down on the wear. :)

  • Yes, I care about having 'good' shoes for DD. To keep costs down, though, I buy most of them NWOT at consignment or ebay. This may change as DD grows and new without tags shoes in her size are less easy to find.

  • I think shoes are important. I don't necessarily believe that you have to have SR shoes.

Our LO has Vans, Etnies, DC's and his feet/walking/running is just fine :)
