Air travel tips- give me all ya got!

OK, I'm condensing everything I want to know into one post.  No specific questions, just give me all the advice you have for navigating through the airport and travelling with a very-squirmy-doesn't-sit-for-anything toddler on your lap.  All your shortcuts and secrets, how you made things easier for your trip...I'll take anything!

Re: Air travel tips- give me all ya got!

  • I just got home from a trip to Colorado from NJ. That's a 4 hour flight. I suggest the following: Schedule the flight around LOs nap time if possible. Download some new APPs to your iPad or phone if you have. Not sure who you are flying or if by yourself but if you can buy more legroom, do it. Buy a new book and toy that will get revealed on the plane. I gate checked a stroller and checked my car seat as LO was a lap child. I had my DH walk in with me up to TSA. On the other end a friend met me at baggage claim to help with my roller board and car seat. Lastly bring lots of snacks that LO likes. Flight attendants are helpful if you need any help. Good luck!

I traveled from PHL to MCO in May, with a 13 month old, with DH, BIL, and FIL.  We tried to push nap, but then our flight was delayed, so we had a semi-cranky-ready to be asleep little girl.  We talked to the check in desk, and got the ok to let DH and FIL get on the plane first (well, with "those traveling with kids" with all of our stuff. They got on and settled.  Then BIL, myself and DD stayed out in the airport until the very last moment, to wear her out.  Once on the plane, we let her be a wiggle worm until we were ready to taxi.  Then as we started acending, we gave her milk in a bottle to help with her ears, and settled her in to take a nap. We rocked, and rocked, and used the binkey as much as we could. Unfortunatly, the beverage cart stopped right at our spot and woke her up.  We read books, had lots of snacks, and played with the apps on my phone (huge fan of the fisher price free apps) and we purchased a sesame street movie to watch on my phone.  Pull out all the stops.  I recommend the new toys as well. We had a canvas bag filled with little people, animals, and a shape sorter that she could sit and play with.

    Good luck!

  • I did two separate posts about this in my blog.  The first was after a trip with my son at 10 months, the second was after a bunch of trips when he was 19-20 months.
