UPPER back pain?!?

Is anyone else having pain in their upper back? The muscles in between my shoulder blades are so tight and almost feel as if they are sprained. It is bad enough that it wakes me up in the middle of the night, and it is absolutely excruciating. Bras just seem to make it worse!

I have a bad back as it is, but that's my lower back and that pain most certainly doesnt help matters, but the nonsense between my shoulders is completely knocking me out of commission. I'm living on heat patches, hot baths, Tylenol, and yoga stretches with no relief. Anyone else in the same boat?

Re: UPPER back pain?!?

  • Yes! This is me! I think it's from my poor posture due to the extra weight from stomach and boobs. I've been getting pre natal massages and seeing a chiropractor, but what really helps most is sitting at ALL times with a supportive pillow behind my back (car, couch, work, etc).

  • YES. I have had that for weeks. I am carrying really high. I cannot sit unsupported (like Indian style or without leaning up against something) for more than about 5 minutes before it just KILLS me.

Yes, totally! I had that before the lower back pain started.  I actually suffered from the delusion that maybe I was having  upper back pain INSTEAD of lower back pain.  But then the lower back pain started, so now I have both. Fun fun.

I use those microwave heat packs at work - doesn't cure it and is definitely temporary, but it helps. Someone also just told me that they sell heat packs for joints and sore muscles that stick to you and stay warm for like 6 hrs - I think it uses the same stuff as those hand and foot warmer things. I asked my doc and she said to go for it, as long as it was localized and not too hot. I plan to try those next!

Just be careful with those. I used one for my period cramps and gave myself a horrible burn on my stomach. They definitely can be hotter than you think!

  • Chiropractor? Mine has become my new best friend since week ten of pregnancy. I'm in every three weeks now, and it's heaven!

That's exactly what I've been using. They helped on day 1, but not so much on day 2 or 3

  • Yes. I get them at night. I think my posture goes to shiit when I'm sleeping. I also get horrible pains in between my ribs, front and back, on the left side of my body. They happen randomly but seem to be worse when I'm trying to sleep.
  • Yep.  I have had mid/upper back pain for a while now too.  I keep begging DH for massages, and prenatal yoga does seem to help for me.  Sitting forward bend seems to stretch it out.

  • Pain between the shoulder blades is usually gas pain. Maybe try some GasX.

  • I'm mobile so I can't see if you're a FTM or not, but I got this the first few weeks of BF DS. If you have back issues and plan to breastfeed, I recommend talking to a lactation consultant about BF positions that won't hurt your back. Mine was just due to poor posture, and got better as I got more comfortable with BF and holding DS in different positions, but it was a tough adjustment!

  • I have the same thing. Right between my shoulder blades I get excruciating pain that wakes me up at night. My chiropractor visits help and in between visits DH massages the area. Holding a huge pillow while I sleep is how I attempt to help it because I know side sleeping is what has made it worse for me.

  • I know mine is from my boobs being heavier now. Anytime I don't wear a bra it is excruciating. But wearing a bra 24 7 just isn't the best idea either. I'm ready to have this baby, get done nursing, and get a reduction. I've lived with this long enough, these back pains are the final straw.

Thank you! I never thought of this! I will definitely consult my LC who also happens to be my OB's NPR!

Pain from gas between your shoulder blades?? Really? Weird! I'm guessing that's just during pregnancy since everything is in different places?
I've heard this too, but I definitely don't think it's just gas pains bc DH can actually feel tightness and knots in the muscles in my back around the shoulder blades. I'll def try done Gas X just in case it can help in some way though!

  • No problem! I nursed DS in bed at first, and I think hunching over really bothered my back. Once I moved to the rocking chair, it was a lot better. Also, look into the brest friend or something to hold baby UP to your boob, so you aren't tempted to lean down to baby. Good luck!
