Success after IF

DD had an X Ray this morning

DD is in general a fussy and unhappy baby. Our Pedi wanted to do some tests to see if there is something physical bothering her. We have switched formulas 4 times already and she regressed to eating only 1.5-2 oz instead of 3-3.5 oz. I got fed up and switched her back to Enfamil AR that she liked.

So I took her to Texas Children's Hospital this morning. She had to fast for four hours. By the time they did the procedure it was about 5.5 hours since she ate. She had to drink this barium solution and then I had to hold her arms down while a tech held her legs. She screamed the whole time of course. They took x rays from different positions. She definitely has reflux but no obstructions in her intestines. We have an appt with a GI doc in a few weeks.

I hope we figure out what is wrong with her. Part of me wonders if maybe she is just a temperamental baby and she'll grow out of it. Just so exhausted already!

  • Aye that is terrible. Drinking barium is bad enough for adults I don't know how you get a baby to drink it. It's good there is nothing wrong with her but hopefully whatever it is she will grow out of it soon. Is she super fussy all the time, not eating enough and lots of spiting up from the reflux?

  • Poor thing! DS2 has horrible reflux and definitely has bouts of fussiness. We have been really lucky in that Zantac provides some relief. But, even at 10 mos, he still spits up more than most babies ever do.

He also had an X-ray of his hips for being breech and it was awful. Two of us had to restrain him. I can't imagine adding fasting and barium to the trauma. Poor mama and poor babe.

I sincerely hope that GI specialist has an answer and the perfect plan to address LO's pain!!

She gets fussy for no reason.  One minute she is calm and the next she will erupt.  Some times it is in the middle of feeding her which is so frustrating b/c then you have to calm her down before she'll eat again, so feeding her would take a very long time.  And she won't calm down except for Dad :(  She spits up from the reflux though it's much better with the Enfamil AR.  She was on Zantac and Prevacid and neither did any good.  She eats 3-3.5 oz with the AR which is good for her, since she was gaining weight.  We tried Nutramigen and Soy and she would only take 1.5 to 2 oz, she hated them.

  • Aye that's tough! My son had the issue where the stomach flap didn't develop all the way and would projectile vomit all the time. I feel like it wasn't tile he got bigger around the time e started eating solids it got better. I'm wondering if the other formulas she doesn't like the taste of on top of the reflux. Poor thing I hope they find the answer. Good thing your going to a go just to rule out everything.

I'm sorry that DD and you had to go through that, but I'm glad that they didn't find any blockages, etc. My DD had reflux for a few months, but it just kind of went away around when she was 7 or 8 months old.

  • Has she been tested for a dairy allergy? My LO was doing the SAME thing and we also had a GI done. Turns out that part of her problem (with the severe acid reflux) was the dairy allergy. Once we started on Prevacid AND cut out all the dairy from my diet, her appetite slowly increased. The gastroenterologist told us that it takes about 24 hours for the dairy to clear my system but 3-4 weeks for it to clear DD and for the internal sores to heal.
